Master Don Juan
The Overton Window is simply a way to avoid expressing opinions that are too strong or too weak, and always stay within the realm of what can be said, given the situation, given the group.
For example, at a dinner party, with all your friends present, someone says, "Hey, John, have you got your head together?! Don't you go out and see other girls anymore?", and maybe You and your current girlfriend are hugging, looking at him.
So you reply, "Yeah, have you seen Sam?!... Even the strongest become weak for someone."
Now, this isn't a great example of what I'm getting at, but in this case, you'd respond "like a beaten dog with its tail between its legs," rather than stepping out of the Overton Window to put your friend back in his place.
The Overton Window seems like a great strategy if you're a troop commander ready for war, but the closer the circle gets, and the discussion turns to work, friendships, romantic relationships, your life and career, the more it's up to you to decide whether to be an "ass-kisser"* or a "real man".
If the foundation for being a strong and respected man is to step out, and say things as they are, how do you really think that being good at staying inside the window, lying, deceiving, and persuading others, while always remaining "neither fish nor fowl," can make you great?
If anything, you'll become great on the outside, but never great on the inside.
And we aknowledge that to become truly respected and great men, you have to step out of the Overton Window and say things as they are, to the point of sometimes being considered "weird" and "not following social rules."
I've seen many men use the Overton Window and say things like "I would never cheat on you" or "You would never cheat on me" at social events, only to know that they've already cheated on themselves. Or I've always heard people lie behind their backs but form goals in front of them.
Using the Overton Window or not could differentiate a real man from a real man.
And if all of this is a "game", a real man, is the one who play no games.
*In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien disparages the figure of the politician. You can see the perfect example of ass kisser.
