We dont' have to see the world in black and white, but you have to be faithful to one of two ways of behaving in your life:
Either you choose to live with the constant pressure of having to "think up" tactics to keep people close to you, or, You live your life "naturally," and the people who care about you will be there, and you'll be at peace, knowing that they will leave when that interest is gone.
This doesn't mean you can't use tactics in the second case, but you'll do so when needed, "consciously," depending on the issue at hand.
