It seems you are approaching this incorrectly. I have noticed that this site tends to cater to the serial hookup style rather than the long term thing, so it is understandable that you would get confused. Let me offer my sage advice.
Don't worry about the girlfriend. Period.
Judging from your high school forum posting, I would guess that you are still quite young. Around 15-18 or so? While this is a great time in your life to experiment with the puppy love and all the boyfriend girlfriend hijinks of high school, it all ends before you know it. So Use this time to learn. That way when you enter your senior year or begin college, you have complete control over your social status.
As I said earlier, you are approaching things incorrectly. You shouldn't be heading out in search of a girlfriend. Read some of the archived threads and the bible. There you will find countless examples of how blindly charging into an approach with the mindset that "I must make her my girlfriend" will fail 98% of the time.
Approach it from a mindset of "There is a person I will talk to" It is laid back enough (not getting any false expectations) yet focused.
Obviously you don't say this to her. Your state of mind will reflect it. It will be non-threatening in a sexual sense, but confident enough to produce attraction.
Date around, approach from the different angle, and remember that girlfriends are not going to bring you happiness. You should be cofident and happy to begin with. It is the woman't privelige to be with you. You select them to be your girlfriend from a pool of women you are dating.
