The 3 series has been for the longest time, THE benchmark to what many manufacturers aspire to achieve. Audi/Volkswagen, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, Alfa Romeo, Lincoln and Cadillac all wish they could make a car as well-balanced as the 3 series.
