These situations do happen, both men and women. They are professionally employed, usually with a big company, then one day the place is bought out, lay offs happens, etc. They were at the company for years.
I know quite a few 40-somethings that were simply victims of circumstance and had to move back in with their folks. It's sometimes shocking and sad to hear this , esp. when they are in your social circle...and sometimes you think, 'Wow...I thought he/she was doing pretty well."
But one major buy out, layoff and your'e finished.
Some had to take on jobs at local big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart, server at a restaurant. Of course, they can't afford to live on their own with these part-time jobs as it's mostly part time work...so they are kind of stuck in a rut.
Considering that age-ism is indeed real, chances are they'll never be hired back in a career profession again. I mean, they MAY...if they know someone that can hook 'em (friend or relative), but otherwise, they will be stuck in a mediocre job until retirement age.
Would this make them undate-able?
Let's take this beyond 40-somethings...I know a 60-something year old, parents are dead, brother is dead...and she only remails. She does live in an apartment with subsidized rent and is on medicaid. (not old enough for medicare). Doesn't even have internet. Her health isn't so great either.
I recall a rather elitist loudmouth on my FB feed posting an article about how 40-somethings are, according to him, "leeches" on their folks. SO apparently, there are people like him out there that don't care of the circumstances that led them there?
