Closest hotel room I could find was in Houston. Took me 11 hours to drive 350 miles. Now I find out there is a hole in the levee and the lake is draining into the city.

Great, all of my stuff will be ruined.:down:

Since I'll be starting over I need to find a new city....

Yeah, the levee break really sucks. There are going to be a lot of lost lives when it's all over. Be glad that you got out safe. Losing all you own is better than losing your life. Hang in there...

Wow...Just...Wow. I saw on the news all the water in New Orleans. That is just incredible.

Snatch, diablo, and whoever else lives in Lousiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, hope you all are ok.

I think diablo is the only one who is really close to the mess down there...at least that I am aware of. He mentioned taking pictures. I just hope he doesn't put himself at risk in doing that. Baton Rouge is one of the main staging areas for relief, so there isn't as much destruction there as there was south of him. I haven't seen much mention of damage there so far, and I've been looking. I'm sure he'll be without power for quite awhile, though.

There are a couple of posters who live in that area but evacuated to a safe area and are able to post. As far as I know, diablo is the only one who stayed in the path of the hurricane in Baton Rouge. I know others have most likely lost most if not all of their things, but they are safe. Diablo is without power and may be without other basic necessities like food and water.

The people who did get killed, why didnt they just get the fuk out of there when the warning came out OR is it not as simple as that.

I've lived in Bay St. Louis and Gulfport, MS. Everytime a hurricane finds it's way into the Gulf of Mexico the same warnings come in. People will board up and get prepared only to have the hurricane either go in a different direction or weaken and do no damage. It takes a lot of time, energy and effort to prepare...and it's usually for nothing. That leads to a certain level of complacency and a "why bother, it's not going to come anyway" attitude. That is why people don't evacuate and don't listen to mandatory orders to leave. And then there are people who just don't have the ability to leave from lack of money, no vehicle or disability.

In this case, there really wasn't much point in boarding up because the bulk of the damage came from flooding. There is a casino that was ripped from it's foundation near the beach and was washed inland where it now rests several miles from where it originally stood. No amount of preparation could have prevented the damage to homes and businesses. The only thing that could have been done differently was for officials to bring in the National Guard and authorities to force evacuation on a door to door basis. It's unlikely even that could have gotten everyone out. In areas at such as New Orleans, they really should have had a plan in place where they could at least attempt to get people out of the low lying areas...even if it was forced. I won't be a bit surprised if the death toll from this hurricane reaches the thousands. It's just horrible. :(

MY reality
The latest news reports are saying that looting is getting out of control. While some people are taking food and clothes, others are helping themselves to TVs, furniture, and other valuables. Gangs of looters in the city have gotten their hands on guns and are shooting innocent people and rescue workers. They even had to postpone the evacuation of the Superdome because the helicopters were getting shot at.

Pretty sad. I hope every looter down there gets shot, no questions asked.

That's what I thought at first. But then I read more into it. A lot of people are way too poor, and they can't afford to clear out. That's why there were so many people taken into the Superdome. They couldn't fit everyone, and lot's of others weren't even close enough to go there...and that's why so many died.

It's just really terrible. I initially posted about the gasoline prices, which are going crazy btw. My dad told me he was at the pump yesterday. When he was the 4th one in line, the price was 2.99, and when it got to his turn, it went up to 3.10 per gallon! Wow.

But to complain about that is just plain stupid, because the people who actually got hit are going through so much more sh*t. I can't imagine. This reminds me of 9/11, because I seriously have been glued to the TV for the past few days. It's terrible that it's not getting as much coverage, because in my opinion, this is just as bad, if not many times worse. If it had happened to a metropolitan area in the north, I am positive it would get more coverage. Well, I live in the south east (not in the vicinity of the hurricane though), so I feel that way. They may have to evacuate New Orleans...never been done in US history since only one time in the 1800s?! My god. It's just horrible. I wish the best to everyone who's out there.
