How to move to a different country?

Alright, this is a pretty crazy idea I had but I'm just curious as to how I would go about it. I'm bored out of my mind in New Jersey and have thought seriously about moving to another country for a year or so. Now hypothetically, how would I do this?

I wanted to explore somewhere on the Mediterranean, possibly Greece or Spain. This idea is in its extreme infancy right now, but I'm really due for an extended change of scenery for awhile and this area of the world seems like where I want to be. I am not wealthy at all either so I'd have to get a job soon after settling in somewhere.

Now, how do I do this? I don't think I can just show up in the country, rent a place, and start working. Do I need visas and work papers, etc??

Decide where you're going first, decide what kind of kob you want, if there's a market for the job skills you have, and if you need to learn the language really well before going to live abroad. Then, worry about visas etc, these are paperwork that's important but mostly a matter of time and money.

Get your US passport, first. Go to your local county building, and apply for a passport. However, you will first need to provide the county clerk with two, 2x2-inch color photos of your mug. Go to a FedEx/Kinkos to get that done. Also, when at the county clerks' office- you need two forms of ID also. Driver's license, and birth certificate, and a $55 fee, will easily get your application underway. Now, wait 8-10 weeks. Why so long? The passport agents have to conduct a full criminal background check(potential flight risk?) and US citizenship verification, before you are even allowed to travel outside this country. I hear convicted felons have to jump major hoops, with their lawyers, before one is even issued.

Then, research EVERYTHING about the desired country you wish to live/work in. The internet can help mostly in this area. Also, shop around for the lowest airfares, to your destination. If you plan on being a student abroad- check local colleges for exchange programs, which can assist you greatly, throughout the entire process. Otherwise, start sending resumes to employers. Alternatively, you can save up some extra living expenses, while you are there looking for work, too. I would strongly suggest going to a country where english is spoken, on a secondary basis(i.e; England, Germany, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Tonga, New Guinea, etc.) The best, and fastest way to learn a foreign language, is the Rosetta Stone software training program.

Getting a visa requires going to that respective countries' US consulate(ask county clerk), and completing a visa application. The rest is waiting for approvals. Good luck!
