how to be more emotionally available but not reactive?

I've noticed that while I can talk and be outgoing w others I have a tendency to be "closed off" emotionally, which I think sometimes was helpful to me. It gave me some authority and at times make it seem like I care less about things. However when I try to be more "expressive" I tend to get too excited and reactive to things, which can come across try-hard and needy.

How do you find a balance between the two?
