How often do you get oil changes?

Just curious.

I know the common belief is that you should get it every 3,000 miles, but almost every car manual recommends to do it every 5,000, some newer cars even 7,000 miles.
I read somewhere that oil breakdown doesnt start until 5,000 mark with regular oil, and over 10,000 with synthetic.

As i understand the 3,000 mile message was heavily promoted and sponsored by the oil companies, whats your take on this?

I've been beating my head on this one for awhile now. I compromised between the general 3,000 and my oil breakdown. I usually do it at the 4000 mark. Or anytime in between 3-4 when I know I'll have the money too

Now my new car has one of those oil use meters, and I was told at the dealership that I can trust that thing. But judging by what's happened so far I'll be able to get 10000 km if not more before it says I need to change, and this makes me a bit uncomfortable as I really don't want to screw up my new car.

Do you guys think that's too far before getting the first oil change?

What does the manual for the new car say? I would probably start there then compromise between the meter and the manual if they are different. Or find a mechanic and ask or research your vehicle online.

You can trust the engine oil life monitor but that monitor is not designed to give you maximum engine life. I would change my oil and filter on a new car by 3,000 miles because it broke in. I think the owner's manuals usually says basically change oil every 3,000 miles for severe service (which is basically 90% of drivers) and 7,500 for normal service (someone living in a mild climate who drives long trips in residential areas). I think 5,000 miles or 6 months is generally the longest I would go between oil changes.

While it's kind of true engines can outlast the usefulness of a car, late model cars are so expensive and built well and 4-cyl engines work so hard I think changing oil at 3,000 miles is still a good idea, especially in Summer and winter. Plus I like to keep my engine in top shape. I don't think synthetic is necessary. I think it's also important to go to some place you trust that uses good oil and filters. I change my own so I know what I'm getting.

Agreed with KX.

I take good care of my motors, both in my car and motorcycle. Frequent oil/filter changes can only help your motor. What's the big fvcking deal? Change your oil regularly and consistently. If you're a tight wad who doesn't like to spend the money, then do it yourself you cheap bastard!

But seriously, not that big a deal...just change the oil and filter with regularity. And stop using paper filters and go with a K&N filter.

ketostix has pretty much spelled it out. Climate and driving habits are the two primary factors for oil changes. I live in the desert, my daily driver (My Toyota Prerunner) gets oil changes every 3,000 miles or better depending on how hot it's been out here. My Celica gets it ever 2,000 because I race that car more often so the strain on the parts, in tandem with the heat means the punishment is more grueling. FYI we're not talking quarter miles either. This is mostly desert/ridge racing in the sierras, so what I'm asking of my vehicle requires more care.
