Hey guys can you help me ?
Recently I started exercising at a gym after not having done much exercise for a few years. The gym were I joined up gave me a free fitness assesment session where they measured my weight (86kg, 189lbs), height (188cm, 6'2"), bodyfat (17%) and an approximation of my V02 max using a exercise bike which had averages and algorithms it uses to do the calculation. So not a proper V02 max test. I scored really low for some reason 16 ml . kg-1 . min-1. I understand you are eligible for transplant at 14ml. I know the machine probably underestimated me, but by that much?

I joined with a friend so Ive been able to compare myself with him. He is my age, shorter (173cm, 5'8) and weighs less (72kg, 158lbs). For the V02 max he scored somewhere in the mid 30s, which is average for our age.

This is where I get worried, when we are on the bikes we do the same exact settings, however, his heart beats 20-30 or so beats slower than mine. So, when he has 130bpm, Im doing 150-160. Mine gets up to 190 when he only has 160 or so. 190 sounds dangerous?
It doesnt feel like I get any more winded than him, infact I am able to last just as long if not longer than him on the bike or cross trainer (he has lower pain threshold maybe?). And recovery time seems comparable. My baseline heart rate is 63 as measured by an EKG.

A couple years ago I had issues with chest pain. I went to a doctor and he took some xrays and did an ekg test and found it had nothing to do with my heart and was either reflux related or muscular-skeletal (sp?) issue.

thanks for any opinions guys,

relax my fellow Aussie, your heart rate is good and low, no need to worry, however you may not have been eating properly. i suggest you do moderate and frequent cardio, and eat your steak and three veg, and also start a light weights program with light bench press, rows, squats, dips, military press and chin ups. when i was 22, i was about 6'4', 190 pounds, and that's what helped me get good endurance and start getting some muscle happening. eat lots of wholesome food and your blood will soon get nice and oxygenated. don't push the cardio too hard, just keep it regular, so you can associate it with enjoyment rather than pain and make it a long term habit.
