Folliculitis

I've been having a problem with folliculitis on my scalp. This has caused a thinning of my hair and bald patches.

My question is, is the hair loss permanent? My doctor(General Practitioner and not a dermatologist) reckons not. However, everything I read on the net suggests it might be.

Anyone have any idea?
