Why "Whatever You Want" Keeps You Single

She says the movie looks dumb; you suddenly agree. She tests you with a little attitude; you apologize for nothing.

You think you're being easy to get along with. She reads something else entirely: a man with no edges. Nothing to hold on to. No friction, no tension, no reason to wonder what he really thinks.

The "22 Rules" taught me to push back — playfully, calmly, without needing her approval. Strange things happened after that.

Bonjour,

Well I'm still in France, here're the latest moves.

Metro girl 1: I met her months ago, but she's been busy + hasn't responded.

This girl takes a lot of energy to attract. She's cute, Franco-American who grew up in Paris. When I met her, I asked to see some magazine she was reading, really to hit on her, but supposedly to see what kind of concerts it offered. I got her facebook. I contact her, nothing. I contact her, she apologizes. I ask for her number nothing. I think it's all over.

Out of boredom one day, I mean months later, I ask if she's still in Paris. The secret with this one is persistent but funny. I say "Are you trying to hint that I'm not the center of the world?" She apologizes and gives me her phone number. She suggests we go to a bar and get a drink. I reject it (out of principle, but it felt right too) and suggest another day. Also, I say (in both English and French), "I'm way too ADD to sit in a bar and chat. Can't we walk, throw, DO something?" In my head at the time, I thought this was very masculine. Now, I just think it's stupid, but whatever it worked. She says a walk is good. I awkwardly try to compliment her: "Good answer, I like people who like to walk!" It's true, but I still felt stupid saying it. I suggest a walk on a different day, she says maybe she'll be free.

I knew I needed to trap this girl yet again (she takes so much effort!). So a few days later, I give her a meeting point and tell her to bring strawberries. I'm going to start drinking the whipped cream at 12 on the dot, I say (so that she won't be late, and so that she'll look forward to good food, besides, this is different from most other guys. Different is good).

She doesn't remember who I am. Aww great. What a b!tch! She says (to the SMS with the strawberries), "who is this?" I write back, "an international man of mystery." At least I challenged her to be clever. And she was. "If you don't say who this is, no strawberries!" Good response. I say, "Do the public good a favor (a subtle reference to the fact that she studies poli sci) and don't become a detective later in life. If you still don't know who this is, well, don't think about it too hard. Guess we weren't meant to be friends." I'm not sure if she was totally bsing or what. But I made a mistake in my french in the last message that gave myself away in any case. She says, haaaa, david, see you saturday. That would be in two days.

My god, what effort that took! And she might have a bf for all this trouble!

David

"I'm Not Looking for Anything Serious Right Now"

When a woman says it, guys hear a confession. A heads-up. A scheduling conflict.

Here's the translation: I don't feel anything. Right now. With you.

Watch what happens when a man triggers actual attraction. The busy career, the recent breakup, the "not in a place to date" — all of it evaporates instantly. The same woman who was guarding her freedom is suddenly free every night.

The "22 Rules" explain why. When the right switches flip, her timeline rearranges itself around you.

L'américaine

Ah, the story of "l'américaine," the american girl.

I'm sitting in a bar with a friend, and there are four Americans talking at a table across the bar. Now, you have to understand, I am a coward to beat all cowards, but in Paris it's different. When I see an American, there's always something to talk about, simply because we are two foreigners from the US in France. So I approach all four of them, "excuse me, you're american?" And so conversation begins, it turns out we study at the same place. The girl I'm going for is a bit torn between her friends and I, she asks me to sit down and I invite my friend over. We chat for a bit, but I feel like I'm interrupting, so I get her email and bolt.

I email, we exchange some witty, and slightly flirtatious emails. I haven't used my wit for years, and it feels pretty good. I suggest we see a museum, but since she was going to leave a few days later, I up the ante, cancel the museum and propose that I show her Montmartre (a beautiful neighborhood of Paris) by night, which by the way, is gorgeous. So we're walking around, she's very happy because she had gone out to drink a bit before. She's ADD so she's quite happy bubbling along on whatever topic comes to her head. Me, I sometimes found her a bit boring, but I'd just make fun of her and it was all good. I was proud of myself because I said next to nothing about myself. I focused most of my energy on asking her questions I didn't really care to hear the answer to, and observing the scenery around me (that's what I talk about when I'm nervous, or when I feel a conversation isn't going well). But I really liked how much energy and wit she had - so saddenly rare these days!

So, at the end, I bring her to an isolated bench, which I had preplanned, and which by the way isn't very far from my apartment. I have barely gone on dates in my life, I have still to this day only kissed one girl (and that was after four dates and two nights in the same bed!). Let's just say that this sort of rushed action is entirely new to me. So we sat on the bench, I would try to touch her from time to time, but I did it so awkwardly that she knew my game was to touch her so that she would get used to it. She was not too comfortable with my strategy, it seemed to me.

So we're talking and talking. And all this time, a battle is raging inside of me. Should I try to kiss her? But how? Every time I thought making a move, I saw an image of her rejecting me horribly and full of scorn and disgust.

She'd placed her bag between me and her. I doubt it was a mistake. It's not that she didn't want me to try to kiss her, she's a girl, that's all. Girls are crazy. But that bag was really disturbing me. If she'd REALLY wanted me to make a move, she wouldn't have put the bag between us, it seemed to me.

So as I was kicking myself and the hour of the last métro got closer and closer. She lives on the other side of town, so I knew she would either have to take the last train or I would have to make a move fast and have her stay with me. And, she told me then that she was busy for the rest of the week until she leaves, so I knew it was now or never. Stupid bag in the way!

My strategy, was to start stroking her hair when I got a chance. If she reacted badly, well it just wasn't in the cards. But we were too far away. I asked her if she wanted to see a poetry board in Montmartre. The entire time I was frighteningly calm. I'd already decided to give up. I walked her towards the board, but I didn't see anything. I just gave up on the spot. I don't know why. I determined to take her to the métro. And so we walked directly there. She was disappointed. At the métro, she asked me if I felt safe walking home, if I didn't want company. But I couldn't see any way to say, "actually, gee I feel really unsafe, how about you walk me there." Damn, if only I'd made some joke like "actually, I could use a flip-flop wearing superhero." Sh!t. But no, I'd already decided to give up. I gave her the culturally required kiss on the cheek (completely non-sexual in France) and I left.

If you're planning on returning to the US i don't see how you could ever meet up with her again.Think this for a minute, and tell me if you would just say "**** it" and make the move.

Haha, nope, I still don't think I would have. I like to think of myself as too serious about meaningful dating to just kiss a girl once and never see her again (although this is just an excuse I told myself, of course).

I have bargain basement skills in most areas of dating, but in Kino I just plain suck. I gotta get better in this kino department pronto.

"You'll Never Feel READY to Walk Over"

Next Monday you'll feel more confident. After the gym you'll feel more confident. After one more drink you'll feel more confident. After you get a better haircut, a better jacket, a better job.

You've been "getting ready" for two years.

She's standing ten feet away right now. She'll be gone in four minutes. No amount of preparation will manufacture the courage that only comes from moving your feet.

Walk over. Stumble through the first sentence. Let it be clumsy. Let it be imperfect. You will feel more alive in those ten seconds than you have all month.
