Epicurus Chapter II: Hierarchy of Love
Aristotle, one of the greatest if not the greatest philosopher of western society spent the entirety of chapter 8 of the Nicomachean Ethics discussing the hierarchy of friendship. Although in the same book he briefly laid out a foundation for his views on love, he never dove too deep into this particular topic. Similarly, I am a strong believer that a hierarchy exists in relationships with women and its quite similar to Aristotle’s. I’ll briefly explain my views on this topic.
Hierarchy of Love:
Relationship of Utility – A relationship that fundamentally consist of what a person can provide to the other, usually women are quite apt at cultivating this relationship in particular. The relationship in particular is not necessarily short in length but tends to be. It is very low quality(one sided) and will last for as long as the side who is receiving such benefits continues to receive it. Once said utility is gone, so is the foundation for the relationship. And in turn so is the relationship.
Relationship of Pleasure – Although this relationship is a step up from the previous one. Very common among the youth and general population. It still tends to be or very low quality for men who can not use it properly. The basis of this relationship is the use that two individuals can give each other. Whether it be sex, companionship or a combination of any other use humans can ultimately give each other. Once again the problem with this is that women tend to be masters at using men for the most while giving out the least possible amount in return(see marriage). But a problem still arises human are very fickle in nature for the most part and our desire and wishes quickly change. As a result, in many cases the usefulness dies out for one if not both parties and said relationship is then destroyed.
Relationship of Virtue – Most difficult and of highest possible longitude. In terms of the dating world only about the top 1 percentile fall into this category. This is the relationship drawn to another person’s goodness and the qualities of excellence they posses. Not one sided but instead focuses on mutual pleasure and goodness. One must have the ability to “The man of knowledge must be able not only to love his enemies but also to hate his friends.” Like Friedrich Nietzsche once said in this relationship. Meaning one must be able and willing to constructively criticize each other and build a strong and lasting foundation overall. Although it is the most rewarding and of the highest possible quality, takes a lot of time and effort while also being very rare to find.
