So I've been eating a can of tuna a day now for a while because it's a great source of protein. I'm actually thinking about eating two cans a day but i've read you could get mercury poisoning or some sh!t. anybody know anything about this?

Is tuna really that bad?

It is high in mercury. You can get mercury poising, but it is accumulative. What that means is it builds up over a significant period of time, not just a couple of weeks. I'm not sure how long mercury stores in the body for but taking breaks off it would help and eating two cans every second day wouldn't hurt at all. It also depends on the rest of your diet though.

OP, there may be some risks with heavy metals such as mercury and if it worries you, try getting protein from different sources (eggs; different fish like salmon, cod, haddock etc; lean meats like chicken, turkey, venison; or good old beef/pork/lamb). Apart from reduced risk of heavy metal poisoning, varying your sources of protein will mean taking in a range of vitamins (B12 especially), minerals like iron and other nutrients.

I know it might cost a little bit more but it will probably be worth it in the long run.

I have been told to have no more than 2-3 cans of tuna per week... but I have no scientific proof of anything to offer for this. Just what I have heard..
