Do you consider State Police elite to local police?

I am not in law enforcement, but I find this interesting.

I get annoyed when I hear people say State Cops are the "elite'" police force.

Sure, their training is harder and longer, but they ALL (State and local) deal with the same *******s.
 

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

No I wouldn't consider them more elite. It varies by locations. Some state police act as the highway patrol and primarily only police state "owned" property. In some locales the local police go to the State's academy for training anyway. In some jurisdictions I'm thinking like W. Virgina the state police have a lot of authority, but that might've changed. Some states have something similar to the FBI but at the state level who primaruay only deal with serious crimes or complicated white callor ones.

I would say generally in most places sheriff deputies exercise the most authority. They typically run the jail, work right out of the courthouse and have the broadest authority within the county. As far as "Elite" I would say large citys' police force would be or maybe federal law enforcement. But in general I would just throw all the state and local law enforcement together and consider the Feds to be a little different.

I would consider some counties to have more "elite" police forces if they used more advanced/progressive training and field operations. An example outside of law enforcement would be the Phoenix, AZ Fire Department, very up-to-date on their SOP's, training/methods and even cohesiveness as a whole.

They have much better training in most cases than the average city kitty, thats for sure. The state trooper academy is pretty intence, about like boot camp. The written exam is also quite difficult. A friend of mine went on to become a trooper after serving two years in a city police department and he had a hard time with it from the very beginning. He later quit due to all the corruption that went on in that department. He's working as a construction manager now and couldn't be happier to be away from all that crap.
