For the past few years, I have been working at a large, corporate company. During this span, I have only used 1 personal day (last month for a family issue), but 0 sick days.
A few months ago, I submitted a floating holiday request to get a day off next week (we receive two per year). Our scheduling coordinator turned it down saying they would have trouble replacing me if I took the day off. Instead, he awarded the day to a new colleague that works similar hours as I (so much for company loyalty, right?). The coordinator then tried to pick a day for me that would be most convenient for him, which is against company policy (we can request floating holiday dates, scheduling will approve 1-2 of them). Recently, I have also been asked to fill in for co-workers who called out sick, and sometimes work a double shift because they didn't make an effort to find someone to help cover for me.
You know where this is going. If I were to use my first-ever sick day on the same day I had previously requested off, do you think there will be a problem? On one hand, it would be obvious that I'm not actually sick. On the other hand, I have never used a sick day while most of my co-workers have all used at least a couple during their time at the company. The only guilt I feel is for my co-workers, who I enjoy working with and would be a man down for a day. At the same time, scheduling has been jerking me around (to the point that even my co-workers notice) and management doesn't see my borderline tight turnaround times as a problem, even though it's fairly uncommon.
