So, whilst browsing the internet for information on writing like I sometimes do, I happened across an interesting quote - "A chapter should be like a womans skirt, long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to keep interest"
How does this relate to you? That particular quote doesn't, but think of yourself as the book.
Think about any books you have read, what makes them exciting.
- Good characters (Where's your social life)
- A sense of mystery (This should be obviou)
- A sense of adventure (This too)
- A sense of danger (Don't be afraid of doing stuff)
- Storyline progression (ESCALATE, ESCALATE, ESCALATE)
A good book never reveals everything straight away - it keeps the reader on edge and interested, wondering what will happen next. The moments that evoke the strongest reactions are those we do not expect.
NEVER, EVER, ASSUME THE ROLE OF THE PROTAGONIST.
The protagonist is often boring, and is manipulated by the antagonist quite easily
Instead, become the book, set the rules and decide the characters and their roles yourself, and remember that some characters just may not fit within your book.
