I have been to "good" karate schools to spar back in my kung fu days, in fact one of them had a teacher that was 3rd in the world in point fighting competition, ive sparred nationally ranked people too. Maybe if you do it for 20 years you might be able to fight...... but if you box or kickbox...

as far as submission fighting goes, i think sambo and shootfighting are pretty cool stuff cuz i really LOVE leglocks. I only rolled with a few guys for a limited time but i really liked this nice single leg into a heel hook.....damn the leg locks are where its at :)...... i guess if i did...

Martial arts will do one very good. If you are looking to just get in shape theres nothing better, however if youre looking to learn to defend yourself or ....be a badass then you better watch what you take. I used to do kung fu and id really laugh when i see all these karate black belts...
