I currently do not belong to a gym (financial reasons) but have been doing alot of pushups called 21 downs (did these in wrestling practice in HS) You do 21 pushups and situps and then deduct by 3 until you get to Zero.

I have noticed a difference in my arms, chest and a little shoulders.

basically because bw exercises will only get you so far, but if you're happy with the results then fair enough.. :) your progress is limited without resistance though.

I was part of the confusion:)

I can do 200+ pushups in a row so his dumbass playing card workout was worthless to me.

btw... financial reasons?

Do I smell an excuse?

$5 a month is what I pay for my gym membership.

exactly. try throwing a couple hundred pounds on your back and doing a few squats... you'll be in a whole different world.

+1

I have a copy of it. NG, Infinite Intensity, and Starting Strength are my 3 favorite exercise-related books.

I substituted squats with weighted pistols for a while and my quads are pretty big. Probably not as big as they would be if I had just squatted though. Also my balance is way better now.

do what feels right to you. exercise is exercise.

if your doing pushups and situps and getting results, stick to it.

there are tons of athletes who dont use weights. hershal walker - the running back for the vikings years ago - never touched a weight, all his exercises were things like pullups, situps, pushups, etc.

and let me tell ya, that dude was big and ripped.

that said, the gym is a good habit to get in to.

No kidding? That is pretty cool about Mr. Walker.

Bonez: $5.00 a month? Where is it at the YMCA?

key to muscle/strength is to constantly increase the resistance. Adding weight is the simplest resistance. For that reason barbell work best: they allow for small increments.

I did daily pushups for 3 years before started strength training. Gave me results. But nowhere the results lifting weights does.
