place to place.
for the past few years i have noticed that you can't do jacksh@t nowadays without something being protested. i wouldn't mind the protesting but it has become quite effective to the point that it seems anything that people complain about becomes a law now.

the first wave of assault was against the smoker. first it was banned in bars, restuarants, workplaces, etc for good reason too. the sh@t kills people who are in its radius. i am a smoker and i respect people who don't want to be near it. what makes me furious is that you can't enjoy it anywhere though. they now are getting ready to unleash a new law where a smoker will get a fine if they are seen having a smoke while driving. what about how dangerous it is when a hot blond is gabbing away on her cell phone and cuts you off. people wouldn't consider that dangerous because everybody owns one and gets calls time and time again while driving. they should just ban smoking for once and for all. i would be for it, just to see the looks on peoples faces when a new huge tax gets introduced because the government has to make up for the loss of income from the smokers.

fast food is the new smoking of the future. it's addictive and horrible for your health and causes obesity. fat people complain it made them fat. so the companies introduced healthy choices and they are almost as bad because they add sugar to the salads. people think that they should shut down these businesses because obesity is their fault. last time i looked the fast food companies don't force you to go through the drive throughs.

companies that are fighting the fda to bring back ephedra to the market, asking why is something that was proven to help people lose weight banned because of a few deaths and smoking is allowed to stay on the market when it is proven to kill millions of people a year. does that make sense. who makes up these rules?

videogames which are fun as hell but are also under the spotlight because of the influx of violent games which have mature ratings. how stupid are parents when it comes to buying a violent game that says mature on the front of the box for a kid. then they discover how bad and violent the game is and b@tch about it. sorry to say but videogames aren't for kids anymore.

this must have been a blow to alot of students but a new rule is about to come into play. no cellphones or ipods are going to be allowed at schools, colleges and universities. people that own these devices are enraged at such a dum rule. they don't hurt anyone but wait...aren't they disruptive. anyone would know this by hearing a cellphone go off during class or some douche listening to heavymetal behind you. people with blackberries are like the smoker to me. they drive me nuts with the clicking. lifes fine till somebody gets a taste of their own b@tching.

germ freaks are now b@tching that babies who go to the grocery store and sit in the carts and get a dirty diaper are now being considered a banning. people don't want there precious food to get contaminated because a baby made a mudpie where it sat. parents should just go back to leaving their kids in the hot car.

what about alcohol. i can't believe people haven't got their way with b@tching about drinkers and drivers. some people are irresponsible and drive even though half intoxicated and kill yet alcohol still prevails at stores. i just don't understand the rules of this madness.

what ever happened to having a tough skin.

It's simple. It used to be that people went by "Live and let live" and "Love thy neighbor". Now, it would seem that the "national religion" of the United States is "Victimism". You may say that it's "Consumerism", but that's a popular alternative.

According to the national religion, you must complain about the length of the line you are standing in until it's your turn. Then, you hold up the line the longest by being rude to the service person, having a nasty attitude battle with the cashier, fumbling through your purse for exact change, asking 800 questions, digging out your coupons, complaining about the cost of your purchases, taking a moment to ponder if you want to put something back, and being counterproductive - because it's FINALLY your turn. You must also complain about how ridiculous traffic is and in the same sentence complain the smog. But, you must do so while sitting in gridlock, on your cellphone, and as the only person in your mega-huge daily-driver SUV. Don't forget: never use your turn signal.

Furthermore, you have to impose your will onto everyone and everything that offends you without regard to wants/wishes/desires/lifestyle of other people, because hey, you're an oppressed victim. Amen.

Soon, we'll all be fined for using profanity or wearing cologne.

Personally, I see all the laws as oppression. I no longer have "freedom of lifestyle" and if you step back and look at the broader picture, you may be a bit shocked if you consider the concept of a "socialist society".

I just laugh, now, at all the "laws to protect the stupid from natural selection". Need an example? The speed limit. Need another? Jaywalking. Another? The cutoff time for alcohol purchases.

OK I will preface this with the fact that I am Canadian.

I have noticed that Americans have some problem dealing with complex issues. They can't understand that nothing is black or white, and that you can't legislate all the bad things out of society.

All the situations the original poster pointed out are at their worst in America. The older Westernized cultures around the world, notably Europe, are always laughing at how dramatically Americans take certain issues.

The thing is, it's not even something that has to do with your political slant. Conservatives complained about the whole "P.C." thing back in the late 80's, early 90's, claiming it was a sign that intellectuals had too much power in the U.S. (lol, in a country that is distinctly afraid of being smart). At the same time, liberals are concerned with conservative agendas to control female sexuality, sexual content in the media, and so on.

I'd argue that this movement to make everything black or white is a hangover from the old puritanical impulses... and the results in America are laughable. Everyone sues everyone for the smallest thing. You can't say certain words on T.V. or show a woman's breast or you'll get a fine. You can only smoke in certain areas. As Vulpine noted: excessive speed limits, and jaywalking.

But I vehemently disagree with Vulpine's idea that this has something to do with being a socialist society. Most of Europe, and us up here in Canada, is MUCH more socialist than you guys. Like I said, it has more to do with that puritanical thing.

At least, that's an outsider's guess.

I for one am all in favour of making smoking a highly restricted activity. I'm all for self-destruction, but second-hand smoke has been proven time and again to really mess you up. Just go fricking outside and deal with it.

As for cellphones... you know what? I think getting them out of high schools is a pretty danged good idea. Have you SEEN how ridiculously obsessed kids are with their cellphones? It's ridiculous. Colleges, though, that's crazy. By that time they SHOULD be adults and should know when to turn the damn things off.

Don't go getting all vehement now, you might have misunderstood. I left it vague because of the "polital" tone. There is a right way to go about things, and a wrong way. For example, health care. You mentioned suing people... I'd be interested to know how the number of malpractice suits in Canada compare to the number in the U.S. (per capita of course).

Oop... let me just leave it vague.

I totally agree with how ridiculous things are becoming in the U.S. Fat people complaining about FAST FOOD ahahah it's not like the companies are forcing them to eat it, it's all personal choice and they're addicted to it because they have no personal control over their impulses. Public schools in MA had to get rid of sugar/junk foods because parents complained how their spoild fatass kid who plays WOW everyday and skips gym class was spending money on candy instead of buying "healthy school meals." Well it's the parents' fault for spoiling the child and lettin him play games all day. So complaining and banning snacks for other NORMAL kids who are healthier than their kids is facist. This weight loss pills is laziness to the finest too many people believe they are entitled to success without even breaking a sweat. I especially hate those ppl who praise fatties who finally decides to exercise and are like wow ur an inspiration to me! NO they finally realized how unhealthy being fat was there's nothing special about losing weight, you were just too lazy to do anything. This brings me to another thing that really pisses me off! WELFARE!

Most people are too lazy and expect the government and others to take care of themselves, this is why so many people are on welfare! That really pisses me off! People who CAN and have the POTENTIAL to make money are too lazy to get jobs so they sit at home doing drugs and complain about how much their lives suck. While ppl who really need welfare checks such as retired old ppl and disabled veterans don't get a single penny.

Finally I think people are complaining WAY TOO MUCH and just need to suck it up! Just like the homos ya wow homos is offensive right? OMG sue me! Wait let me rephrase HOMOSEXUALS complaining about the snicker commerical from the superbowl... how is that offensive!? it was just two straight guys making out by accident thinking it was very unmanly TO THEM and compensating by ripping their chest hair. No offense but to straight guys two guys making out is UNMANLY it was just a JOKE CALM DOWN jeez people takes things way too seriously like the femanists with sand in their crack. What really drives everyone nuts is how everyone thinks that their opinion matters in EVERY SINGLE ISSUE and everyone needs to hear it. Ex. Emos or Goths noone cares about your stupid poems and wrist cutting go see a damn therapist.

Also, understand the geinus behind rules. Between speed limits, smoking bylaws, how 'healthy food' still costs the same (or more) as 'crappy food', and how freely we can sue each other, how easily a girl can cry rape and all of a sudden, we're in a jail cell (thanks whoever posted that a week ago)....how much money is in all of those nameables, either getting transferred to the government, or between the rich and the poor?

I thought of something 2 weeks ago. Why not make red lights have an additional setting, where instead of your standard red, yellow, green, arrow, you have that, AND while your light is red, and if the intersection isnt' too nuts, to make the yellow light stay on with the red (because yellow is so underused!). This would tell the driver that if the intersection is safe and clear, then you can go though. Think of all the time this would save at nighttime when you seem to hit every stupid light in existance on your "5 minute drive home". If the intersection is really busy, then there's no doubled light. Simple? Time saving? LOGICAL? Fvcking right it is.

Heh.

Too expensive to implement on a wide spread basis, but similar projects are underway. With the newer motion detector technology, it's starting to make sense financially, the way the sensors were designed before, it cost too much.

Problem is, about 95% of traffic lights are set on timers. The time that the light remains green, red, or yellow, is in most cases determined by a formula that was created 30 years ago, based on the size of itersection.

Putting a red/yellow sounds good. Many newer lights now days are set to flash red to the slower part of the itnersection, and yellow to the busier part, any time after 11:00 pm and before 4:00 am.

Personally red light ticke cameras really tick me off. In NYC the number of read end collisions has increased almost 300%. The number of accidents related to the running of a light have gone down by 40%. So the end result is at best even, as far as the amount of damage to cars, and injuries. The big difference is that each time that damn flash goes off, the city makes another $50.

The part that really ticks me off, is that by increasing the lenth of the yellow by just 1.5 seconds, they can achieve better results.

BTW, food for thought for any new yorkers, the tickets are only $50. They do not add points to your license, and do not effect your insurance. So getting a $50 ticket is infinetely preferrable to having the rear end of your car smashed up.

Actually, americans are just too d@mn uptight. It drives me nuts how I have to watch my language, and comments.

Here's an example of ex-puritanical left overs. US vs Italy. US a person is caught stealing a lets say a three hundred dollar watch. In the US, that's most likely about $3000 in legal expenses, possibly a 10 day stay in jail, probation and a criminal record. In Italy- for the most part, the person will have to buy the watch for double the price.

The problem with american society, and education is that there is this new mentality of "you're special". A kid is never dumb. Instead they are developmentally challenged. A fat a$$ is not fat, he is big boned. Lastly a woman who sleeps with just about anything that moves, isn't a $lut, she's confused.

God forbid you should tell a joke at work that involves the N-word, or $lut, or *****, or pu$$y. Suddenly you need sensitivity training...

The thing that pisses me off, is people complain even when the subject of the complaint is true. I mean come on, a woman doesn't wear a cut out where her tlts are falling out so that a man will look at her ugly eyes. If someone calls you fat, maybe that's BECAUSE YOU ARE!

People b@tch about their lives, but they do nothing to change them. I worked with a person for more then a year, kept b@tching about how much she hated the job. I moved on, she's still there b@tching about how much it sucks.

People should just learn to keep their complaints to themselves.

Too fvcking complicated.

Over here they have implanted weight sensors under the asphalt on certain intersections. So when there are no cars on one side, the light automatically turns green.

They have those here, except people are too oblivious to figure out what they are. I absolutely loooooove stoping short of the line just so I trip the sensor and hold up 50 oncoming cars whilst I get a green turn arrow. All the while the one car behind me is wailing on their horn. Then *ding* green arrow: making a ten minute left turn into a 30 second one.

Or better yet, realizing that I'll be waiting for 10 minutes and throwing the car in reverse (have people look at me like I'm bonkers), backing up and tripping the pad, and stopping the sheep crossing.

btw, if you do run into me, congrats, you just paid for one more of my frequent vacations :)
