Save the Meat for the Weekend
The recent Western obsession with protein diets is turning out to have potentially fatal results, namely osteoporosis and kidney failure. During protein metabolism, your kidneys must excrete the excess components of protein, known as amino acids.

To complete this process, the kidneys neutralize the acids by binding them to calcium, which in turn, depletes your body's store of this essential mineral.

The rate in the U.S. of osteoporosis is strikingly higher than China, where almost everyone eats a lower protein vegetarian diet. Evidence has also been found that excess protein weakens the kidney function. But you don't have to give up meat entirely to attain longevity.

In studies of animals with chronic kidney failure, simply reducing their intake of protein extended their lifespan by up to 50 percent! Take this advice: limit your meat eating to only the weekends, and you will be taking a balanced and healthy approach to your diet.

so, what's the deal?

An accupuncturist/chinese medecine specialist told me not so long ago that too much protein was bad for the kidney's. (he gives good advice btw)

I answered him that I needed protein for weight lifting recovery.

His answer was that he understood my situation & that I had to choose the pros & cons. I choose the pros of protein diets.

Here's what I think:
1) Everything has pros & cons
2) Even if high protein diets are bad for health, if you exercise, eat veggies, eat fruit, don't smoke, don't drink,... you eliminate a lot of risks the average population is exposed to.
3) Your the boss of your body.

If you want serious results in strength training, weight lifting,... you'll need the protein intake. There's no way around this.

I thought that by drinking enough water you can stop your kidney from damaging, can't you?

This is why weightlifters suplement their diet with calcium and drink more water than the average person.

Some more unsubstantiated BS.

When lifting, your body uses up Protein to build muscle. You should have one gram of Protein for every pound of body weight on lifting days.

The study doesn't take into account, people who work out, obviously. People not working out taking in excess Protein that isn't used may cause some problems. Over-loading anything that isn't used can cause problems.

What's interesting is that it's never mention that resistance training leads to increased bone mass and density. Thus, training with heavy weights increases the need for dietary Calcium.
Most protein powders are made from Whey, which is high in calcium. Most bobybuilders who are not lactose intolerant use milk for their protein shakes. Anyone who is health conscious tries to eat healthy and adds dietary supplementation to their diet. Most health conscious people and fitness oriented people already drink approximately about a Gallon of water a day.

Keep your protein intake at adequate amounts.
Use necessary supplements, and drink enough water.

I do add that it may be important to look at the health of your liver. And always try to detoxify yourself. I would be more worried abou tmy liver than my kidneys in this circumstance.

Oh, bullsh1t. That's like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute and claiming that jumping killed you. No, hitting the ground without using a parachute killed you.

The word is out there. Drink plenty of water and none of this sh1t occurs.

Losing calcium? Take in more calcium. Oh the rocket science involved there.

What lifters do you know with osteoporosis anyway?

All these studies are done on the "average stupid fvck." Add high protein, high fat, low carb to the ASF's lifestyle and of course there are going to be problems because he's just going around still being the ASF without adjusting the rest of his life to properly fit in with his new lifestyle, but I guess i can't blame the ASFs since they get no-omega3-induced ADD so they can't bother to research the new diet they put themselves on. The rest of us, the >ASF, are making sure we take in additional water, calcium, fish oil, and Vitamin D to make up for what our diet lacks.

Egg Calcium : 29 mg / med. egg
Good thing I eat all those raw eggs that are killing and making you guys so sick so when my squat hits 500 lbs i won't end up having my spine snapped because i ate too much protein.

Kidney stones can be made of calcium. But as always, dietary calcium has no influence on calcium in your kidney's.

Compare the dietary cholesterol - blood cholesterol myth.

high protein diet increased the acid load to the kidneys, raising the risk of kidney stones. Animal protein has been shown to boost urinary excretion of oxalate, a compound that combines with calcium and other compounds to form kidney stones.

Although it is not clear from the study whether bone mass was affected, the findings show that such diets may increase the risk of bone loss over the long term.
The human body tries to maintain a slightly alkaline (basic) 7.365 blood pH.
Physiological disease is almost always the result of too much acid stressing the body's pH balance, to the point where it provokes the body into producing symptoms of disease.

If tissue pH deviates too far to the acid side, oxygen levels decrease and cellular metabolism will stop. In other words, cells die. You die.

So, a declining pH just can't be allowed. To prevent it, when faced with a lot of incoming acid, the blood begins to pull alkaline minerals out of our tissues to compensate. There is a family of minerals particularly suited to neutralizing, or detoxifying, strong acids, including sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. When these minerals react with acids, they create much less detrimental substances, which are then eliminated by the body

Now, a healthy body maintains a reserve supply of these alkaline minerals to meet emergency demands. But if there are insufficient amounts in the diet or in the reserves, they are recruited elsewhere, and may be leached from the bone (as with calcium) or muscle (magnesium) - where they are, of course, needed.

If the acid overload gets too great for the blood to balance, excess acid is dumped into the tissues for storage. Then the lymphatic (immune) system must neutralize what it can - and try to get rid of everything else. Unfortunately, "getting rid of" acid from the tissues turns out to mean dumping it right back into the blood, creating a vicious cycle of drawing out still more basic minerals from their ordinary functions and stressing the liver and kidneys besides.
So, animal protein creates an acidic blood pH...which causes leaching of buffer minerals...and straining of the kidneys...

And according to recent research as well as ancient Chinese medicine, kidney and heart health are linked.

So, this can ultimately cause heart problems too.

Bottom line is that animal protein does have some drawbacks and if you choose to eat it - I would try to buffer it somehow. Or maybe try veggy protein instead.

Did you know:
And big leafy greens are very alkalizing too! Sounds like Popeye was onto something, eh! :D

Look, it's not rocket science fellas - remember in lab class? What does acid do? It dissolves stuff like bone. Now, if your BLOOD - circulating all throughout your body...is ACIDIC...what the h3ll do you think IT's gonna do?

What happens to acid when you mix it with a lot of water and shake it up?

rippetoe talks about the acid/base relations in starting strength... if you're eating lots of animal meat (and who here isn't?) you need to balance it out, as wayword suggests.

Every week there's a different scare. I think it all comes down to lazy researchers trying to justify their funding. So they conduct a half hearted poll or look at some statistics and release their conclusions in an article.

Yahoo are famous for these whimsical "discoveries" and they often contradict each other. I take no notice. You'll probably find the authors of these articles are out of shape and unhealthy anyway.

Old-school bodybuilders used to swear by HCl supplementation. I do think they had a point sometimes.
