You are standing at a bus stop with a couple of friends, you guys are just shooting the shyt like usual. One of your friends points out a girl that is absolutely stunning, you take one look at her and feel that you must approach her, you walk up to her.

alright, I took about 6-7 seconds to think of this cuz, "are you getting on the bus?" sounded stupid:

"do you know where this bus is headed?"

if she responds:

yes (then go on to describe how she's friendly and not many people are where i come from, something like that)

no (tell her i'm new here and ask if there are any good places to visit for convo starter)

Damn this stupid bus always being late. They say George Bush is a fascist, but unlike Mussolini he can't even make the buses and trains run on time! Ugh, what a moron!.. So where you headed?

You forgot to mention logistics. Is she alone? With friends? Are they talking or is there a lull in the conversation?

With so many variables we face, there is no ONE response that will work in any given scenario. Social instinct is your best asset. You really need to keep an open mind, feel out the vibe and know how to deal with people in order to get good at this.

Having said that, my favorite pickup for transit spots is to ask which way the bus/train goes. Which leads to convo about where she is heading, how she reminds you of someone you didn't get along with in gradeschool (but seems much nicer) BLA BLA BLA. If the vibe is right, you may get an insta-date...if not then you number close when you part ways.

On street pickups, I have found this is a harmless way to start a friendly conversation, and once the door is open, you are free to charm her pants off.

Somehow I think all you people who would ask for a number after talking to her for about 10 seconds are going to fail. Honestly, how many times does that REALLY work?
