Tonight I am going to have dinner with a woman at a charming little Mexican restaurant here in Chicago. I am telling you this because 4 months ago I was having dinner at the exact same restaurant with another woman I was dating. Things ended badly between us because I had AFC'd her even though she had high-interest in the beginning of the relationship.
Now, when I pass by that restaurant I am reminded of the time we had there. And yeah, I do get bitter about it. But you know what? I'm going back there tonight with this girl, have a good time, and create new experiences there. I'm not going to let the past memories of my previous relationship get in the way of creating new ones there.
The point of this little story is this: if you are coming out of a relationship, chances are there are going to be things that remind you of the girl, whether it's a restaurant, bar, movie, song, etc. But rather than let these triggers of memories interfere with your current relationships, create new ones over them so that the past is mitigated by new experiences.
If there is a movie the two of you saw together, go rent it and watch it with your current girl. If there's a song on the radio that your ex loved, make fun of it with the new girl. Overwrite the experiences that you had so that these things aren't linked to your old relationship. Doing this makes it easier to let go of the past and get on with your life.
