- Where do you live?

-Do places have signs posted about mask being required?

-If you don’t wear one do the employees say anything?

-If you don’t wear one do non-employees say anything?

I live in Illinois south of Chicago. What I am finding is it signs are posted everywhere but if you go in without one employees don’t say anything. I am also finding from people I talk to that women will harass other women for not wearing a mask but men are pretty much getting left alone.

Disclaimer: if you are going to tell me that I should put one on go find another thread this isn’t the thread for you. I’m Wanting to know what’s going on in different parts of the country, not about whether you think I should wear a mask or not.

DFW, Tx here. All stores I frequent have the signs, and all shoppers wear them. Costco with controlled entrance won’t let you in without one, but haven’t seen obvious enforcement anywhere else. I wear one to enter any store I shop at including Home Depot.

@billtx49 Costco is very strict here too. But their big competitor Sams is not as much.

The signs limit their liability, beyond that it’s up to managements national health commitment …
Dead customers don’t buy much ………
No they don’t LOL then there are those people that would rather buy everything online then go into a store that pushes a mask. They don’t do much good for the stores either.

Online has been killing brick and mortar for at least a decade now, but quarantine has accelerated that…
An unintended consequence of China, internet access, globalism, and now virus…

95%+ are wearing masks in Virginia. Practically noone says anything if you don’t have one on. Part of Governor order is medical exceptions (no letter required, no explanation of condition required). Basically it's practically unenforceable.

Our state requires masks to be worn. But I was in the gas station earlier, and no one in there was wearing a mask, including the employees. They were doing pretty well at keeping six feet apart however. If you go into a grocery store there will be signs on the door and more compliance.

To be honest, I don't think you're likely to catch the corona from these quick interactions, especially if you maintain your distance and practice good hygiene. I'm guessing most people get infected from prolonged exposure to someone else who is infected. Like if you work alongside someone who has it, or have a long conversation with someone, for example. But that's just a guess.

Basically it's practically unenforceable.
I don't really think it's the government's place to force you to wear a mask. I see their role more as educating you with the best current information, and making recommendations, and people should decide what's best for them. I'm a firm believe in liberty however, and I know there will be some who vehemently disagree.

Some compare it with the seatbelt law. That might not be a bad comparison, I can see the argument there, but the difference is driving is a privilege, not a right.

@zekko Does your state have an actual enforceable law where police can arrest if people don’t wear masks? Ours doesn’t but the Governor is doing everything he can to make people think we do. And people are believing it.

I'm located just outside of Philadelphia and all stores and public transportation have signs requiring masks and the requirement is enforced. As a result PA's case rate never bumped back up in a big way after the first hit. Most places seem to have masks they give the stragglers who forget/refuse to wear them. Bars not so much and have been the source of several super spreader events.

Interesting, I had to look up the answer because I didn't know for sure. Apparently not wearing a mask was considered a misdemeanor until recently, but right now even though masks are "mandatory", there is no penalty for noncompliance. Like you say, I imagine most people think it's a punishable offense.

Exactly. In my State the police can only ticket or arrest you with either a local ordinance or Illinois Compiled Statute (ILCS). Local ordinances are only for that city, county, park, etc. An ILCS would be state wide if it existed. Short of this all that can be done is a business can say “wear a mask or leave” and if u don’t do either then they can call police and you can be arrested for trespassing. But for trespassing, not for the act of not wearing the mask. I just saw a lighted road sign today on an Interstate that said “Masks are mandatory in Illinois”. As a cop I laugh cuz, as I said, there is no underlying law I can enforce it with. The Governor standing at a podeaum and pounding his fists doesn’t cut it! And that may be how most states are pushing it. People will believe anything they hear on TV.

I'm guessing that stores that sell groceries have to push the mask agenda, because if they don't the health department can give them problems. Usually stores that sell food seem to push the masks the hardest, pretty much all of those stores have the "must have mask to enter" signs.

Most Grocery stores here have signs and some have people at the door but once inside the employees don’t mess with you. Except for Costco that we mentioned above. The employees there will actually get you if you even just pull it down and have your mouth covered but not your nose. They are ruthless. I like Sams better.

there was 2 cases at the Costco here and this is a smaller city so I just let my membership expire. I usually save about $40 only when I go, so no big loss. I heard they're lining up outside 6' apart and only letting in a few at a time. I think masks are mandatory.

I find the cities vary depending on how big the fines are and how well it's enforced. Around where I live, the city officials do undercover surprise visits to businesses unannounced and if they are not in compliance, they can get fined $10k-$20k per day. This is easy to wipe out all the profits they made. It really doesn't go by what the business owners think, they just want to make some money.

As such , I can see their side and even if I don't like wearing masks, I will in my area out of courtesy and respect to the business owners. Now if I travel to another state and see that it's being loosely followed, I'll do the same as others there.

I live in another country, so not sure if it's germane to your question. There are fines for not wearing a mask in public here. I haven't heard of anyone getting one, nor have I seen police doing much about it. I do see people out and about without masks from time to time, but 95% or so follow the rules. In stores it's more like 100%.

There are also social distancing rules in place and most people have adapted to them. There have also been some public smoking bans, but that's because previously you could still smoke at an outdoor seating area in a restaurant or bar. (You can still smoke on the street, away from people.)

A lot of it seems arbitrary to me. At my gym you wear a mask entering and walking down the hallways, but it's not required for a workout, which is where people are breathing harder, lol. Some people elect to wear one during workouts anyway. And I think it's funny that while seated and eating or drinking you can have it off (logically). But to get up and use the restaurant restroom you put on the mask. I guess it's about trying to maintain freedom and enterprise while still keeping people fastidious whenever possible.

@samspade You say there are fines for not wearing a mask in public, but you don’t know of anybody who has gotten one. That is the part I struggle with most of all that I discussed a few posts above. Is there really a law on the books To enforce that, or do people just think that there is? If you know anyone who is a cop ask them, cuz you might get the same answer I give here in Illinois USA; THERE IS NO LAW!!!!

Here it's a law by royal decree.

-New Jersey

-Yes. Most businesses have "No mask, no service" or something to that effect.

-Depends. My local grocery store they will stop customers without a mask. All state-run agencies like NJ Transit will go so far as escort patrons off pubic transit for not wearing masks. Lately larger entities have masks on site and will give to customers that don't have one. They'd rather keep the customer in the store.

-Area and business dependent. I've witnessed employees not care, and I've witnessed some non-masked customers get cursed out by other customers (usually elderly) for not wearing masks.
