Ok im moving to the U,S of A. Ive basically got 2 families living in New Jersey and Houston, Texas. I dont know what city the New jersey dudes live though.

Im going to be probably there for a couple of years and then come back to england and carry on with my education. Man im so happy at the moment though. I cant believe my parents have given me this oppurtunity.

So anyway i got to choose which family im going to integrate with during my stay. Can you american peeps tell me about both these places and which one would be better? Hows the rating for the chicks out there? I just want to get a rouge idea of both places.

Also im indian and do any of these places have a bad vibe to us brownies, you know with the terrorist crap... even though i aint a muslim at all, ill be easily mistaken as one.

I live in Houston...its alright. Its a very big city, so youll find a lot of diversity here...white, black, hispanics, chinese, japanese, indian... Im never been to any city in New Jersey so i cant really tell you how they compare. But if i was going to some foreign country and i had to decide between to cities, id choose the bigger one, just because im going to be more likly to find people with the same interests as I.

As far as racism goes, since your British, pretty much the second you start talking everyone should be cool with you. We all think british accents are the coolest thing ever. As long as you don't walk around with a turban on (or anything else that screams India culturally) you shouldn't have it TOO bad.

In general Americans can be rough on people based on the color of their skin. But that TENDS to be only until you talk to them (unless they're over 40, in which case, hope they're open minded). Once you start talking to them they can tell you don't have an accent from a country that they hate, and they'll be cool.

I've never been to either of those towns, so I can't definitively tell you what to expect.

I've heard good and bad things about both places. Ok, I haven't really heard good things about jersey.

But then again, as a state, jersey is a bit of a joke amongst the rest of the country (hey, I'm sure south carolina, where I'm from, is a joke to everyone else too).

Just talk to whoever's closest to your age in the families in those two towns, and they should be able to give you a pretty good idea of what you're in for.

From what I hear, Jersey is a filthy state of questionable morals and legality. But like has been said, it's basically a joke to the rest of the country. We kind of make it out as to where New York throws their trash.

I've never been to either, but I think Houston would definitely be the better choice. Get used to the heat, though.

ok yea a couple of things have come to mind now....Houston is hot and humid but is better than a lot of places and is nothing that you cant adjust to. Everything in Houston is so spread out, so youre going to need a car if you dont want to be riding the metro all the time and you have lots of places to go....But if you have a routine i guess the bus would be fine.....and traffic is unbelieveable, especially now that I10 is being upgraded to like 16 lanes or something crazy like that..... but the traffic moves anyway. In general the city is pretty clean compared to other big cities ive been in. Lots of restaurants... Theres plenty of bars and clubs around. The Univeristy of Houston is pretty big and is a good school, in any case that youre interested in contiuing your education or something. We dont have a bad vibe to you brownies as you said bc theres plenty here already. Theres plenty of jobs and buisness opportunities if youre interested in that. Even if i didnt live in houston and i was in your place trying to make the choice id pick Houston over NJ.

Haha...as a lifelong Jersey boy I think I'm going to have to chime in.

Go to Houston :D

Nahh, New jersey's an interesting place. On one hand you have Camden and Newark which I'm certain are almost completely responsible for the ****ty rep that we get. Two miserable cities really. But outside of that we have New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and DC all within 3 hours driving distance. Our beaches are damn cool with boardwalks and casinos. Down south we have lots of woods and forests to offroad on and camp, up north we have mountains to ski at or snowboard(plus the Poconos are real easy to get to), biking trails, etc etc. It's a pretty cool place to live and the girls are freaking hot!(we have some dirty *****es tho)

Essentially Jersey and Houston probably arent too opposite from each other, but Jersey is more in the center of the huge DC-NYC megalopolis and has great proximity to really interesting places whereas Houston probably is way more spacious once you get out of the city limits.

I've lived in both Houston and Jersey ( Burlington and Cherry Hill). I would choose New Jersey mainly because it is close to New York and Philadelpia, two major metropolitan areas. Houston while a big city, still feels like it is out in the sticks. It is also not close to any other major cities. So you are kinda stuck when you live in Htown.

Houston is also know as the fattest city in the world as well as one of the most poluted. Though, it is cheap live here and we do have decent Basketball.

Whoa...that's crazy. I'm right in Mt. Laurel and used to work in Burlington. I wonder how many South Jersey people are on here

From the replies, im leaning towards Jersey. And hearing its very hot in Houston makes Jersey more of an option. I dont like really hot weather. Being in England ive became accustomed to the cold weather and kind of like it (and i also i like rocking winter wear) It being close to New York also helps.

I found out what city in Jersey i would be living in, some place called Edison. Anyone in Jersey know about this place?

So yeh Jersey seems like the choice but ive still got a lot of time to think about it coz im moving in October.

I live in Piscataway that's right next to Edison. I lived in Burlington County too -- Ft. Dix back in early 90s.

Come to think about it, NJ is a better choice than Houston because it's close to NYC and Philly. You also mentioned about being used to cold season.

My sister lived in Houston she said that it's pretty culturally diversed, hot and humid, and the traffic is horrendous.

Even though I'm not really fond of this state, NJ has a lot to offer: I already mentioned being close to Philly and NYC. Edison is about 2 hours away from the closest ski places. Depending on which beach you want to go, it's from 30 minutes up to 4 hours away. Edison is about 2.5 hours from Atlantic City -- the closest bus pick up is at Middlesex Mall in South Plainfield, also a town next to Edison. Edison is very close to Rutgers University -- for obvious reasons and to hone your DJ skills of course.

We also still have a tremendous amount of farm land even though it's dwindling.

Edison is a nice place to live and you won't get bored. We are about an hour away from NYC. Train going to Penn Station, NYC goes through Edison stop, so you're set.

Like I mentioned, I will probably move out west because I'm not really fond of winter but will definitely miss NJ because my family lives here.

Hope that helps.

Sorry I skip your post WhitePimp. I pretty much echoed what you wrote. I forgot about DC though.

I used to live in New jersey but moved out to Cali. ive crossed edison a couple of times and its not a bad place, just like any regular city. you mentioned being indian and it does have quite a large number of indians there. theres some hot indians broads for you to dj on, so you should be able to settle in well.

Geez, I can't believe I missed that one too. Edison, Piscataway, Iselin (well all surrounding towns) are populated by Indians. So don't worry about sticking out.

New Jersey has some really rich ass towns and some real shytholes, it depends what area you're in.

Never been to Houston
Amen to that, as I am from Jersey. One minute you are surrounded by million dollar homes, 5 minutes down the road you can be in the ghetto.

I have never lived anywhere else, but Mass (where I am now) but if you are looking for great food, beaches, ethnic diversity and history....Pick NJ.

If you do not like a fast paced life style, tons of traffic, and high cost of living....go to Houston.

I am from Jersey.

A lot of hot chicks here, no doubt. But they can be very picky and stuck up, and that has nothing to do with race.

I am very familar with Edison. Great location as you are equal distance from New York City and the Jersey shore.

Houston sounds like a ****$*hole

In NJ you'll meet a nice Italian babe :)
