I thought I saw another post about this a while back, but I was not able to find it. Right now my hands are so dry that they crack and bleed, mostly around the knuckles. I am using a moisturizure on them called "Vaseline intensive care: Total Mosture Dry Skin Lotion" also it says it has Vitamin E and Minerals. It helps a bit but it dosen't seem to last very long and comes off the second I start washing my hands. Now I do wash my hands fairly frequently and a lot of that has to do with the fact that every time I go to the bathroom I wash my hands. The soap I use is regular Dial hand soap. I have never heard of Dial drying out skin, but I know its not a moisturizing soap either. So my question is there any particular moisturizer and hand soap you guys can suggest that will help stop my hands from drying up so easily?

Thanks for your help.

Go see a dermatologist. They have medicated lotions that you may need. The doctor may also suggest that you put lotion on and wear gloves at night.

Your extremely dry hands could be symptomatic of another medical condition. A friend of mine developed a rash on her hands and it turned out she had a problem with her blood.

Good call. Then again, how many times are you using the bathroom every day? If you're at all like DiCaprio was in "The Aviator", perhaps it might be beneficial to just get some of that "Germ-X" stuff from Wal-Mart ($4.99 for a big bottle I believe) - the instant hand sanitizer. Rub it around your hands a few seconds, shake dry, your hands are clean. Or you could be unsanitary and stop washing your hands after you go pee...

Moved to H&F.

I forgot about those hand sanitizers I used to use them all the time. I'll definately go purchase some of that tommorrow. I do go to the bathroom a bit more often then most people. Although I'm not sure if I go as often as Howard Hughes did (That's who the movie is based off of right?). I certainly hope this isn't it a medical condition. To me it just seems like a nuisence, albeit a sometimes painful nuisence, but it could be something worse. I'll definately consider seeing a dermatologist about this if it dosen't improve over the next couple weeks (winter is the worst time of the year for dry skin in my area).

More replies appreciated.

A bit off topic: I'm curious in the movie "The Aviator" did they show Howard Hughes when we became a full fledged germophobe? I know in The Simpsons (and I didn't realize this till my mom told me) they did a parody of him in the episode where Mr. Burns opens a casino, by showing Mr. Burns with tissue boxes on his feet and extremly long finger and toe nails. I'm just curious if they showed that in the movie or not.

Exactly the same problem here

... and, unfortunatley, it's been going on for years.

A dermatologist will tell you the following:
  • It's eczema. Use some ointment (not lotion - there's a difference) with cortisone in it;
  • Don't wash your hands so much;
  • Use a good quality moisturizer without perfumes & other additives;
  • Put vaseline or another sterile ointment on your hands before going to bed and wear latex gloves;
  • Stop masturbating.

OK, so I just made the last one up.

you see girls putting lotion on their hands every ten minutes in class, they carry it around in their purses all day....

you should do something like that

the doctor told me to mix lotion and vaseline together for the winter. maybe thatll help.

Use a good quality moisturizer
the publix brand works the same but for three dollars less, at lest for me

My hands get really dry during winter. Usually, my skin starts to crack on my knuckles. You just have to use lotion everyday until they heal.
