I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was younger and I know that is often accompinied with depression, but was never diagnosed with depression. I took some ADHD medication and behaved like a zombie, did improve in school but stopped taking it.

I think I've always had depression(it's hard to fully realize when you have it) but I struggle to do simple things. Like laundry / showering. Pretty ashamed to say it but I frankly just don't really care to do it and put off laundry until I absolutely have to do it.

Was just looking at depression symptoms and exhibited some of the milder form one's but didn't have all the signs.

To be honest I'm not even 100% sure I'm depressed. But I did find myself blowing off my friend(s) more lately and have trouble getting motivation doing basic chores, like I said.

But I think part of it could also be that when I was younger my mom ALWAYS did my laundry for me.(This is why you should give your kids responsibility and make them do chores) Pretty much always bathed infrequently.

But I think it could be / probably is depression because when things were going really well with my girlfriend I WANTED TO shower in the morning and keep up on my shaving. Now I let my shaving go all weekend until I have to be back at work on Monday.

Can anyone else relate / talk about what they do about their depression?

It may not be depression, it may be just plain laziness, procrastination, or indifference. I used to shower every other day and only shaved when it got itchy because I didn't really care (indifference), I didn't do laundry because it was a chore (lazy) and waited to the last minute to do anything like homework or dishes (procrastination)

Nothing helps more than some healthy exercise and activity, even if you have to push yourself out the door to do it, then do it. Make it a habit. Release the endorphins and listen to some upbeat and inspiring music on your routine walk. You'll feel better physically and you'll WANT to do laundry (I actually like doing laundry now because I iron my clothes and make some really good fashion choices right out of the dryer), washing dishes still sucks **** but I don't live in a third-world country where everyone eats off of tortillas...

I take vitamins, I try to eat well and I exercise. It helps quite a bit.

Also don't masturbate for a week and tell me what you feel like. No porn, no masturbation for 7 days back to back.

I saw this in some prison movie that I can't recall at the moment but it's also what worked for me. And since depression can be like prison there's a good relationship.

Lose yourself in the routine. Do everything you do, from the mundane to the excellent down to every last detail. If you live your life this way you are constantly moving and not thinking too much. You live the disciplined life for discipline's sake, which makes it so much easier when you have reason to be disciplined. Perhaps I'm old school here but that's what worked for my mom and dad and everyone before them. And it worked for me.

Thanks for the advice guys. FYI I do shower and do my laundry I just procrastinate and have to make myself do it pretty much.

I think I'm going to start taking some vitamins Alle. I know a lot are pretty much bogus though. Have any recommendations, fish oil maybe too? I've heard a lot of people preaching about masturbating being bad. I haven't ever really experiemented either way with it, but I do do it about once a day. Definitely more than once a week.(I"ll start that challenge) How often do you recommend?

Good advice Fairshake, I usually try to do that. not always focused on it. But I think I might of seen that movie too.

Subliminal messages have helped me a great deal in fact I use this program every day. Send me a pm if you want more info I can get you a deal.

I like the fact that you are out seeking solutions to your issue rather than just going to a drug dealer (cough pharmacy). There's better solutions that don't pollute your mind and body. There are alternatives to everything but we are too lazy too look for them most of the time.

Vitamins are not bogus. What you're thinking about are those heavily advertised health supplements like akai berry and such.

Seeing as how you're depressed. I would very strongly recommend the B complex everyday, it's the stress vitamin. Vitamin Ester C, everyday. No more than 5000mg long term use. Ester C is acid neutral form so it doesn't upset the stomach.

Gingko is very good both for mental health and physical health. It's an antioxidant and increases circulation. Optional.

Those are the very basics IMO.

Stop for a week. Cold turkey. An entire week. Tell me how you feel at the end of the week. I guarantee an improvement and a more energetic and focused you.

But do you have the self discipline for a whole week?

Sounds pretty interesting. Yeah, I am not really big on the pharmaceutical monopoly. So do they pretty much put subliminal messages in all commercials? Kind of was getting that impression from the website.

Also, how exactly does it work? It runs off a program that just subliminally sends you positive messages? You must of noticed an improvement for yourself?

@Alle

I will do it. Started today. It's pretty much a wind down routine for me, but I'm not going to do it.

I should also let you guys know I smoke weed. I haven't at all today but I usually do every day and think that also might make me more depressed.

I will hit up my local gnc for those vitamins you recommended.

Also heard water is pretty essential / good for that rocky. I drink too much caffeine to be honest.

Thanks again guys.

It's hard to tell if you're depressed because you smoke weed, or you smoke weed because you're depressed. If you went to a therapist, they would just blame all your problems on any illegal drug use, because that's what they're taught, but it's not nearly that simple.

On the one hand, pot will make you lazier, which will make you get less accomplished, which can be depressing. But on the other hand, no one ever gets really high on weed and then blows their own head off with a shotgun. I would like to think that enough pot would make killing oneself seem pretty stupid, very much unlike other drugs like alcohol and heroin. So in that respect, weed can greatly help someone who is suicidally depressed.

try to answer the following questions in your mind and see what you come up with

Visualize objective answers to these Questions:
1. Who are you grateful for, that has contributed positively in your life?
2. What parts of the world are you glad you are NOT in?
3. What's great about being able to see? Walk? Being healthy? Having a regular place to sleep?
4. What's great about your life? (force this to work- what could be?)
5. What's great about you?
6. What's cool that you can do, and have done?
7. What was the time you felt most happy about you & your life? Recall & relive this experience in detail.

Note - The questions are from www.realamongus.com, There are many more worksheets like that on the website if you are interested.

Really cool. I like that. Thanks. Definitely makes you think / appreciate some things.

@biblebelt You are right about weed in that regard. Suicidal people will are deifnitely more apt to do it on heroin / alcohol. Espeicially alcohol. I'm not suicidal though, never have been. I would be lying if I said I never entertained the thought but it wasn't ever more than that.

First, don’t diagnose yourself. Just because you fit the symptoms of a disorder or syndrome or whatever doesn’t mean that you have it. Society today is filled with hypochondriacs, finding disorders to pin on their problems. From your post doesn’t sound like your depressed, just laziness, procrastination and apathy. Even you think you might not be depressed.

Second, it’s good that you’re trying to find alternative explanations to your problems before jumping to a mental disorder as the cause. Like I said, a lot of hypochondriacs out there. I believe people should consider ALL possible alternative explanations to their situation BEFORE considering that there are a few screws loose in their head as an explanation.

Third, you smoke pot nearly everyday. I think this could be the more likely explanation for your procrastination. Cut that back and see what happens. Also I noticed you used to take ADHD medication. When did you start and for how long? You might have known this but there are findings that ADHD medication affects the brain’s reward pathways link affecting dopamine levels.

This sounds like a good start. Get some exercise, vitamins, diet and 8 hours of sleep and see how it works out for you OP.

Why do people around here keep saying you should stop spanking it? Thought it was proven to be healthy?

Very informative. Thanks. Well, like I said I was never diagnosed with depression but it was on my 17th birthday I believe I just started crying fo no reason when everyone was over. And it's just how I feel sometimes, hard to explain.

I took the "medicine" when I was in highschool. I would probably have to ask my mom how long I was on it for. But I think for maybe 6-8 months?

I didn't know that actually about it messing with your reward pathways. I will read that article.

Yeah, I'm not too sure on the masterbation thing, I've never heard of that anywhere but here.

I might try it though, so I can say I tried at least.(Still haven't spanked it Alle, going strong! lol)

Depression is an internal disease of the mind. It's not like a broken limb, the doctor can't look into your mind and say "yup, looks like it's fractured".

From your post doesn’t sound like your depressed, just laziness, procrastination and apathy. Even you think you might not be depressed.
He also said he smokes weed, which can have similar depressive effects.

1. Dopamine spikes when masturbating. This is one of the "reward" chemicals in the brain putting you in a passive relaxed state. It's also one of the pathways that is hijacked by drugs and various other substances. You don't want to screw with this.
2. Testosterone. Abstinence of 7 days increases testosterone levels to the body's natural peak.

I have been dianosed with borderline personality disorder, but i have yet to take any type of meidication. I have issues from my childhood and a drug history. I mean i have my quirks but as long as i'm doing what i am supposed to do i am fine. I do go to a therapist once a week as well an d have for half a decade now.

i have trouble focusing as well, big time. What i did to combat this was sorta something i came up with, i broke my schedule on a daily basis down to 2 minute intervals, and i literary plan out each minute of my day so that i am always doing something. that way i don't have to think about it. If i have time to think about something, in 10 minutes i could be doing research on manatees or some ****.

Also when I am working, i use a site blocker to block all the sites that i visit (like this one) in my leisure time.

Dang. Sounds like what I should do. I have trouble focusing. I should probably use a site blocker at work as well TBH. I always end up trolling these forums or some game forums.

Still going strong, Alle.

My dear Reyaj, the simplest answer is usually most correct. If you had bothered to pay attention, you will see that most weak men (mentally) follow the same train of thought.

They are susceptible to advertisements, baseless conspiracy theories, religion (not spirituality, they are separate), and sensational news articles that tell them what to think and what to feel. They depend on the external world instead of their own minds and judgment to guide them. In a way, it's a cop out. It's much easier than doing the hard research and investigation and then making decisions.
