Since when do we want to be associated with her past relationships? I don't need some screw up guy from her past influencing the way I play my game. I'm a new person, and I am the future, not a reflection of her past.

Me thinks the original author tends to be stuck in the hollywood view of "The Knight in shining armour", as he rides along to take his mistress away from the jaws of the evil dragon. Or some pre-school crap like that.

Can anyone say emotional dependency?

Yes i think that's the best. If she's distracted by other problems she won't complain about you or think of you as a problem. At least not as much. They have to have something to get worked up about or the world will end and it might as well not be you.
