Now this is my kind of thread. I used to roadrace both bikes and cars semi-pro, so I've had a chance to drive so many cool cars it's crazy.

I have driven the F40, and I came away from it completely unimpressed. Sure it's ungodly fast, but anything can be. For half the money I could have a Hyundai Accent that fast, but that's not the point. It handles like a champ, mainly because it weighs about as much as a half-eaten biscuit. But when you're in it, it doesn't feel that special. It rattles, it shakes and shimmies, gets stupid hot inside there and the A/C is pretty much just for show. if it was just a track car, it'd be brilliant, but putting that thing on the road, with everything that it's capable of is kinda like dating Adriana Lima and being told that you can only have hand jobs. You're not even cracking half of it's potential before you're in "just arrest me now" territory. All that in a car with little to no creature comforts, a thoroughly un-exotic ambiance from the cabin, and gargantuan maintenance bills. It just doesn't make much sense.

I've never been a big fan of the Prancing Horses, but I do see the draw to them. You're not just buying a car, you're investing in an experience. I own a track prepped 93 RX-7, single turbo, full suspension, total stripped down race car that will run away and hide from pretty much any Ferrari ever made (and at a fraction of the cost of even the cheapest Red car), but the fact still remains. The panty dropping quotient is exponentially higher with the Ferrari, always will be. And for no other reason than that little pony on the back.

OT: Out of all the cars I've driven, the Elises, Exiges, 360s, 430s, Gallardos, Murcies, Porsche GT2s, GT3RSs, NSXs, AMGs, Audi S and RS cars, Supras, Astons (even though my next car will be the new Vantage), out of every sports or performance oriented road car I've been in, I still know what I think the best car ever made is.

E39 (00-03) BMW M5. I just sold one (only because the profit was unreal), but I know that I will have another. It's absolutely the best of everything. It's silly-fast from the factory and you can bump it up to 640hp, it corners like a car weighing 1000lbs less than it does, it looks classy and upscale without being pretentious, when you settle down it rides as smooth as any luxo-cruiser should, AND you can still haul five people plus a trunk full of junk. It's seriously a four-door Corvette. I took it to Fallbrook, Cali, about an hour north of San Diego for Thanksgiving, and had more fun on one stretch of mountain road between the city and the place I was staying than all of my years racing. 75mph around a hairpin turn, up to 130 before climbing on the brakes for the next one. Just like heaven. Nothing better in my book (perhaps when they offer the E60 M5 without that crap-ass SMG, that might overtake the old one, we'll see).

LOL...I had a 93 twin turbo RX-7 awhile back myself. I freakin' LOVED that car. The best thing about it was that half of the time people didn't know what it was. I told a couple of people it was a Ferrari. They were like, "REEAAALLYYY???!!!! That's a beautiful car!"

And I don't know about today, but back then the panty dropping quotient wasn't bad with the RX-7

m3's are soo damn cool. that was my dream car for awhile

I have two other cars. I don't like to talk about what i have much (why?) but I do well for myself.

someone broke in my house on christmas (posted here) so right now I am in an extended stay hotel and my Aston Martin is parked in my dad's garage at his house until I get another ho use, which will be in the next month or so here.

My other two cars, which are nice but not Aston Martin Nice, are here where I am.

And it's more than likely going to be Newport Beach.. not San Diego :)

Actually I didn't mention this, but it just so happens that the day my house was broken into, I had let my best friend borrow the car for the weekend. I wasn't going to drive it, and the keys were in my bedroom, so I would have been hella pissed if they just plain "took" my car. I don't do that often, they usually don't ask, but it was like the 2nd time I have ever let anyone else drive that car.

One of my two best friends has a 1993 Mercery.. I don't know the model but it's the big big long car. I think he paid 3k for it when he bought it. He has now got it painted royal blue, has 22' spinning rims on it.. all while the car has engine problems that needs to be addressed.

I look at that and I remind meself everyone can't have money.

I'm not a huge fan of rims, but if done in a tasteful way (rims that fit, with the right tires) it can add alot of value to the look of the car. I would never touch my AM.. it's an AM for crhists sake.

That's like what Chris Rock said about the Bently having rims on it. The Bently sells itself, you don't need the rims.

But like I said, I have 19' rims on my lexus, and they are a perfect fit. Dosn't raise the car or look big, or alter the way it drives.

My other car is a jeep, and I am really am not a fan of putting rims on jeeps... Their jeeps for crying out loud
at age 22. you have alot of money. Earned or inherited?

Man, you guys are so rich. The thought of owning a ferrari never even occured in my head. My dream car is the BMW M5 and Lancer Evo. With the money for ferrari i can afford a couple of those already =D. but really though, i think ferrari's are cool but with that much money, you can get a car with the same performance but cheaper.

I didn't like them, but I'm picky like that. The AWD just ruins them in my opinion. It might be fun in a straight line, not having to use throttle control, but I like a neutral car, and those just aren't. They both are always either under or over steering, there's never really a time that they just plant and go. All you're really buying is the looks and the nameplate.

But I'm biased. I'm actually looking into either a Z8 or new Vantage at the moment, if that kinda tells you my leanings. :D

I drove down las vegas blvd in a a 430 sypder, panties dropped left and right, but you really don't want that street trash in the ride messing up the leather.

What I like most about ferrari is the engine placement. It's super important especially at the high speeds ie the weight distribution for the handling. This is why ferraris win the bulk of grand prix races they compete in.

Mid is ideal on paper, but in real life it actually doesn't make a huge difference. About 5 years ago, the shop I worked for took a 911 Porsche and rotated the engine 180 degrees, then cut new gears for the tranny to get the right rotation. We essentially made it an MR configuration. In the end, no amount of suspension tuning, spring rates, damper rates, roll center geometry, anything, could make it noticably faster around a roadcourse than a similarly prepped stock engine config one of the same year/trim.

Not to say that it doesn't help, just not as much as people think in real conditions. Plus, most of the GP races that Ferrari wins are against other MR cars, so Ferrari doesn't really have an advantage because of it.

I dunno, we took a 430 south on the 95 (that stretch between barstow and vegas) with a 997. We were doing about a buck 30, and we could definatley notice the stick on the ferrari was conciderably better then that of the porche. Maybe it's the over all design scheme (i'm definatly not ruling out quality of the drivers either) or a combination of engine palcement and the suspsension, but the faster we went, the better the ferrari did.

We were going to bring an SRT 10 too, but we thought it would be suicide to attempt any kind of cornering with that thing at speeds that high w/o traction control.

I don't doubt that the F-car gave the P-car a solid thwomping, but with street cars, there are just too many other variables to say that any one thing gave a certain car the advantage over another. For example, I have a friend with a Seal Gray Porsche GT2. That car feels as solid at 160 as it does at 60, despite the fact that the engine is theoretically in the worst possible place, hanging out over the rear tires like that.

Overall design has much more of an impact on handling than just engine configuration by itself, but all other things being equal, the MR car should be the fastest around a track. But the benefit for a street car is negligible.

your friend has a GT2! Can I see it? I've only seen the one in town that's owned by that casino exec at i think the venetian and that was only from a distance.

Where do you work? I want to stop by your shop with my former employer, he owns the exotic auto rental shop on swenson just off the air port by pass. He's always looking for reputable work and good purchases. He might want to do buisness with your company.

Yeah it's definatly true that if you mod out a street car it's going to handle well on the road. We dabble in grand prix racing in cali and desert flats from time to time, so we really like getting cars to perform at higher speeds that aren't typical of an average driver. I defiantely don't race my car, it's just a celica GTS w/cool air and a turbo so I can't hang with super cars. Still it does well when I'm going from place to place about the metro area.

I haven't worked at that shop in years, plus they only did full blown race cars.

And are you talking about Rent-A-Vette? I rented the yellow Lotus Elise from them last year for a business trip. They just about flipped when I brought the car back 24 hours later with over 500 miles added to the odometer. :D

If you want to scope some snazzy cars you should head to the roll-ons tomorrow. It's at the StarBucks at Charleston and Town Center. Every Sunday they get together with lots of Z06s (some supercharged), a few Porsches (including my buddies GT2 usually), and lots of stretched bikes. A couple of times Dana brought out his 8-second Supra, Daniel has had his 9-second Supra and just in the last three weeks there has been a twin-turbo Viper (supposedly making 1200 wheel horsepower), and a Ford GT. Good times.

wow that's like a 1200 dollar rental. What kind of buisness were you doing exactly?! JK has a few race cars, one classic vette with straight pipes and one old school ferrari race car, but I think he has a full time mechanic for both of them. Charleston and Town Center is a pretty long hike around the 215 for me but I might stop by one day that I'm not slaving away for my pay checks at my jobs. I definatly would like to see that GT2 and those supras. A twin turbo viper is like a rolling coffin! I assume it's an SRT-10 although I suppose it could be done on an RT10. On the straight away you MIGHT be safe but i can only image how much 1200 horse (if its legit) would make a viper fish tail with no TC. Thanks for the info.
