What women in their 30s/40s are complaining about is not being able to attract a guy in the 80th percentile or higher for a committed relationship. There are plenty of beta males who are similarly aged to them who are willing to commit to them, especially if they are childless. The numbers of 30s/40s women who are childless are growing.

The wall is actually worse for men. Let's say you're a 40 year old man most interested in women 21-27. These 21-27 year old women can date mostly anyone they want. As a 40 year old man, you're likely going to need to have a similar fitness level to the 20 something guy and you'll need to make more money/have a higher net worth than 20 something guys. If you don't meet those criteria, you'll be settling for women close to your own age. The example I just gave goes for most men in their 30s/40s and likely even 50s.

It depends on how old you are a man and how many kids you have.

A childless man between 40-55 doesn't desire to date a 40-49 year old woman with children under 18 or children over 18 who still live at home. That's too much of a nuisance. I think it's more common to see childless men 25-39 end up with a 25-39 year old woman with kids. Men over 40 who are childless do a better job at avoiding 40 something women with younger kids. The 40s is a somewhat transitional period in the mating environment where men gain a little bit more of an advantage if they're willing to date women their own ages. Still, 40s women have an advantage of over 40s men, it's just not as great as it was 18-39.

Some single dads in their 40s will date single moms in their 40s. This is mostly beta male stuff.

Most of the women I've been involved with since my divorce a few years ago, have been within 5 or 6 yrs either way of 40.

As SW15 says above, kids still living at home is a no-no for me if she's in her 40s.
Even a younger woman, say mid-30s, if she has a mommy-dependent kid I won't date her regularly - If she's in her 30s, I'll put up with her having a teenage kid, but not a younger one.
