I want to start a post devoted to quotes. Here are some of my favorite quotes.
On manhood
Show me the man you honor, and I will know what kind of man you are, for it shows me what your ideal of manhood is, and what kind of man you long to be. --Carlyle--
Thinking, not growth, makes manhood. Accustom yourself, therefore, to thinking. Set yourself to understand whatever you see or read. To join thinking with reading is one of the first maxims, and one of the easiest. --Isaac Taylor--
"The worst thing one can do is not to try, to be aware of what one wants and not give in to it, to spend years in silent hurt wondering if something could have materialized - never knowing."
David Viscott
On rejection
"To find yourself jilted is a blow to your pride. Do your best to forget it and if you don't succeed, at least pretend to."
Moliere (1622 - 1673)
On success
"Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It's quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn't as all. You can be discouraged by failure - or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember that's where you will find success."
Thomas J. Watson
On mankind
"I hate mankind, for I think myself one of the best of them, and I know how bad I am."
Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784)
On doubts
"Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt."
William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)
On happiness
"Before we set our hearts too much upon anything, let us examine how happy those are who already possess it."
Francois de La Rochefoucauld
On positive thinking
"If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it; and this you have to power to revoke at any moment."
Marcus Aurelius

CASANOVA
"He who postpones the hour of living rightly is like the rustic who waits for the river to run out before he crosses."
Horace (65 BC - 8 BC)
"The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good."
Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784)
"An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrow field."
Niels Bohr (1885 - 1962)

Nice thread with nice quotes! I was a library rat when i was younger but i was lost in the wrong section: Kafka, Poe, Kant, Rousseau, Beaudelaire, Milton, Cioran, etc.. All those negative inspiration!
There is an autobiography of Kafka that is soooooo AFC!!!
If you find that book, burn it!! (No! No! Autodafe is not a good thing!)
With all those quotes, you give me back the taste of falling asleep with a great book you are not able to close!
I once looked at encyclopedia of quotes at university and that was soooo boring!!!
That's why i still prefer quotes here and there in misc post rather than in a single thread or list like here. It has less impact.
Here's mine anyway:
On goal achievement:
"Tu peux pas avoir le beurre et l'argent du beurre."
“No one wants advice - only corroboration.”

"Conclusions arrived at through reasoning have very little or no influence in altering the course of our lives. Hence, the countless examples of people who have the clearest convictions and yet act diametrically against them time and time again; and have as the only explanation for their behavior the idea that to err is human." Carlos Castaneda - The Fire From Within

It is humbling to discover how many of our glib assumptions, which seem to us novel and plausible, have been tested before, not once but many times and in innumerable guises; and discovered to be, at great human cost, wholly false.

you can never be happy and dress yourself solely in the glass of other men's approval.

What counts is the arrogant gesture, the complete disregard of the opinion of others, the singlehanded defiance of the world.
