I have been told that weightlifting will reduce one's weight. Is this true and, if so, does this mean that I shouldn't lift weights while trying to increase my mass?

The person who told you this is a complete idiot. Muscles grow because they are overloaded = they become bigger to be able to handle that weight in the future = your bigger muscles will weigh more.

If you eat enough to gain weight without lifting weights all you will gain is fat. But if you lift and eat alot or health food that is then you will gain lean muscle mass.
