Here's a short parable to help you out.

A young man heard of an old wise man. He went to him searching for the secret of success.

When the young man arrived and asked what the secret to success was, the old wise man rose up and started walking. The young man followed. Eventually the wise man came to a lake. The old wise man kept walking, and the young man kept following. The water slowly approached the young man's ankles, then his knees, his waist, his shoulders, and then the water was over his head. He kept moving until he could no longer breathe. Then the old man turned around and went back to his hut, and again the young man followed. The old man said nothing when they returned.

After several thought provoking minutes, he asked the young man, "When you were in the lake, what was it that you desired the most?"

The young man announced, "Why you old fool, I wanted to breathe."

He replied, "My son, when you want happiness and success in life as badly as you wanted to breathe, you will have found the secret."

Wait a minute. If you walk into he water until your over your head, don't you start to float? I can walk up to my chest or something then all of the sudden im swimming. I usually breath really well then.

Now if I walked into quick sand and turned around and walked out. That would be success. Oh and what a secret it would be.

This is actually an old Zen story.

Though the version I heard was a bit more violent (and the student came looking for truth, not 'success in life'). The master dragged the student down to the river and held his head under water until he couldn't breathe anymore. I reckon that would drive the point home a bit more effectively as well.
