Abs are a main thing to have, but you shouldnt only concentrate on your abs. They are part of a "core" .... meaning you should also try to tune around your abs (like your legs and your back muscles.) That way it will look more toned, and it wont put all the stress on your abs.

There are two types of muscle. Humans, like pigs, have both together as pink meat (as opposed to chickens that have red meat and white meat). Red meat is endurance muscle. White meat is quick force muscle. Some men have a preponderance of red meat, and simply cannot pump up. They can climb a hill like the old geezer in Treasure of the Sierra Madre, but they'll never have big muscles. Other men have a preponderance of white meat. They can get massive muscles. They can slam dunk or run a hundred meters in 10 seconds, but those muscles burn after. It's useless to tell most men to pump iron. The average man isn't a mesomorph and won't build much muscle no matter what he does. Better to just be more active. Increasing one's metabolic rate -- the amount of calories burned by "idling the engine" -- is the only way to lose weight without quickly regaining it. Actually, the advantage to being a skinny ectomorph with an extreme preponderance of red meat is that you can f0ck for hours on end without feeling any more tired than if you went for a stroll. Pound her for hours on end and c0m whenever you damn well feel like it. If you want to win a woman over, try f0cking her for hours on end, day after day. She'll be putty in your hands within a month. |

How tall are you and how much do you weigh? How many meals per day do you currently eat? What kinds of foods do you eat?

6'1", 180 pounds. I met with a trainer on Thursday and he also asked me a bunch about my diet. Basically, not good. I haven't eaten breakfast in ten years. I only eat two meals a day. Since I'm single and suck at cooking, it's usually fast food or preserved food, although I try to keep the calories down even with those. I also don't drink enough water. I obviously have some things to work on. Any further advice is appreciated, though. |

XIAlphaMaleIX:
You seem to know what it takes to get your body to the next level. In my opinion, you're gonna have to be willing to get out of your comfort zone. To me, breakfast is important. Eliminate the processed and fast foods. Eat 5-6 times per day. High protein and quality carbs and moderate fats. Start off with consuming 15 calories per lb of your current body weight. You may have to eat more or eat less after a few weeks. It's trial by fire in the beginning. What takes more for one person may take less for you. You just have to do the work to know for sure. Drink nothing but water and coffee. Go to the Vault here on SS and do some research on a training program. In my opinion, the program that you choose is not as important as being consistent. H it the gym 3-4x a week. Stick with the program for 4 weeks and see how you look. If your abs aren't looking tighter or a little bit more defined, then do cardio 2 times a week, on days that you don't lift weights. Do 15 minutes of high intensity cardio (ie jumprope or sprints). I don't cook either, but I do have a George Foreman Grill. Very easy to throw on a chicken breast or a half pound of lean beef. 425 degrees. The alarm sounds and you're good to go. Brown rice, oatmeal, veggies, almonds, black beans, fruit...none of these are hard to prepare. If you have a microwave, then they are extremely easy to prepare You just have to be willing to do things differently and do them consistently.

Wow, thanks man! I'm going to take your advice. And I actually love to grill, but I don't own one anymore. I'll pick up one of the GF grills.
As for the exercising, I'll take your advice there as well. Looking forward to getting my body in shape! Can you recommend some healthy snacks for those extra meals? I work at a hospital, so we have a cafeteria and lots of vending machines. Thanks again. |

Get a big pot, fill it with about 4-6" of cold water.
Put 12-24 uncracked eggs into the water carefully. Put stove on high heat. Put pot on stove. Set timer for 17-20 minutes. Done. --- Theres plenty of protons right there, breakfast and lunch for the rest of the week. |

I recommend 3-4 "whole food meals." That means nutrient-rich protein and carbs (ie skinless boneless chicken breasts with brown rice and a green veggie). The "extra meals" should be consumed in between and would ideally consist of a protein shake high in carbs. Another healthy extra could consist of almonds, but in your case, I would recommend the shake because you need as many nutrient-rich calories as possible. Almonds are great but not sufficient enough in my opinion--not right now anyway. Not for you. And stay away from the vending machines!

I advise you to rethink this. In my opinion, there are good calories, and there are bad calories. A "low" amount of "bad" calories, in my opinion, leads to bad things--obesity, high blood sugar levels, diabetes, and over a prolonged period, death. I also believe that added sugars and transfats are addicting. There are nutritional studies emerging that prove many processed foods trigger certain chemicals in the brain that make them addicting. I don't agree at all that regularly consuming a moderate amount of calories from processed foods is OK. I think it's a bad idea--a very bad idea. Nobody I know ever gets fat or diabetic or dies from eating healthy non-processed foods. Eat the right foods and exercise regularly. It's the only way to true health.

Not only that but once you start eating healthy, even an apple tastes delicious. You eat a donut and you'll be like "what the hell is this sh*t". Your taste adjusts and you'll be looking for less sweet and filling deserts and enjoy them. Like deserts should be.
A small cake made of cream "cheese" and food coloring is not a desert, it's a tragedy. |

Hey Alle_Glory I wish I could say that after 6 years of conscious effort towards healthy eating that I have developed an abhorrence toward processed foods, but it's not been the case! I LOVE the way McDonald's food tastes; I love pizza; beer; ice cream; potato chips, etc etc.
Eating veggies and canned tuna and skinless chicken breasts and plain oatmeal is NOT my preferred foods. I eat them only because they keep me healthy and fit. If the bad stuff were good for me, I'd eat them. For me, it's a sacrifice. I WISH I could eat Quarter Pounders and cakes all day. I choose to indulge a bit on weekends. Usually one huge "cheat" meal per week. And it tastes delicious every time! I completely understand why the majority of people keep eating the crappy foods. They taste great! There's a reason food companies add sugar and transfats and high fructose corn syrup. I think the manufacturers know that people become addicted to them. Most people prefer cake and ice cream over veggies.

You can eat bad foods in small quantities...
If your metabolic rate is 2500 calories a day, and you consume 250g protein (egg whites, tuna, etc) (1000 calories) and then eat a 1200 calorie Mcdonalds meal, your still going to lose weight and mostly bodyfat if your training is on point. your taking in 2200 calories and burning 2500 calories. that = weight loss. Not saying its healthy though. Problem is high processed foods tend to be very calorie dense and tasty, so its easy to overdo it. |

I eat super healthy just because I've been brought up that way (my mums a nurse) and I have the strange paradox of being super skinny with well defined abs.
People look at me and think I'm super skinny, under my shirt are some abs and some defined pecs. They just don't show up when I have a shirt and stuff on lol, so I need to increase the size now. |
