Help on Protein shakes

What are the pros and cons of protein shakes?

I'm 16, and i want to learn about taking these supplements, and of course start to gain some weight.

im 5'8" and i weight about 127lbs.

Will protein shakes be good for me?

yes x infinity. While i cant be specific in the details because not even i know all bout them there is almost nothing that can be negative about you taking protein shakes, apart from $$ it'll cost.

If i stop taking the shakes, will my muscles deteriorate?

Also, i heard protein powder causes acne. Does it affect anyone here, who takes it?

It's a bit vague this comment, but you can't specifically say "Protein shakes will cause *this* " because of everyone having a different genetic make up. I have tried products people have endless troubles with and find no side effects at all and visa versa. Also your diet is quintessential to how well you grow. It's easy to have a protein shake and 15 hamburgers a day and blame sudden horrible skin on the introduction of a protein shake.

To be honest the pros seriously out weigh the cons. If you are looking to build up or tone or whatever you can't go wrong taking protein shakes, as I'm sure you know about how they benefit you after a workout. It is just a case of finding the one suitable for yourself, and if need be creating a custom mixture (You don't have to have just protein powder and milk/water to have a good shake) Use stuff like porridge oats, fruit (bananas esp), peanut butter etc to help boost your protein shake.

Also, your muscles will only deteriate if you stop using them.

If you want to gain muscle you need to get about 200g of protein dailly, this means that you can get this through normal food like meat or chicken or else you can use protein shakes to help meet your protein intake goals!

Protein doesn't give you bad skin, however, at your age building muscle may increase your testosterone which may in turn affect your skin but it is unlikely to be honest. If you want to get some real nice pimples on your skin you should take steroids!

You're mistaking protein shakes with AAS(roids). Anabolics/testosterone injections can give you acne and imbalance your hormones, and when you come off a cycle you'll lose at least a portion of the muscle you gained.

Protein shakes are just protein, like you'd get from eating an egg, having a piece of chicken, or even some steak. The good thing is you don't have to cook food or prepare much to have a protein shake.. Just stir it into a cup of water or milk and drink it.

You're at the perfect age to start lifting dude, for a few months just get into the gym and move around some iron, the harder the exercise, the better it is. Do some bench pressing, some squatting, some deadlifts, and some pullups/chinups. Start with the bar and add a little weight each week.

As for eating, tell your parents to make you meats/vegetables/potatoes/eggs/chicken/etc., and even ask them for an allowance to buy your own groceries. Buy plenty of meats, eggs, chicken, vegetables, and fruits.

Pretty much, lift some heavy weights and eat some good food.

I think it's probably a case of "and or" as in shakes can help you lose weight and or gain muscle. You can get shakes to either 'replace' meals, or make it less likely one would eat by satisfying any hunger urges with the protein (as per the previous answer, seek a trained medical opinion before going ahead be wary of online information on this as it generally tries to push one product or range of products that may not be best suited.)

Protein goes towards repairing and building muscle in the body, particuarly after strain is placed on them - so unless you're actively body building/weight training I wouldn't worry about starting to look like a body-builder. If you're not weight training, but just performing standard weight loss exercise (light cardio work) then protein shakes would work as a meal replacement or assist with making a healthy eating plan (but again, urging to seek medical opinion before buying - not only for health sakes but protein shakes can be dang expensive.)

protein shakes are definitely good for those working out. I get whey protien shakes and they help me rebuild my muscles and deal with the soreness afterwards

At 127, you need to EAT, EAT, EAT to gain weight. Protein shakes are a good way to make sure you get your protein in, in addition to things like chicken, beef, etc. The best way to gain weight, is to simply eat!

if you don't already have a complete diet, protein shakes are very poor value for money. it's consistent training and informed eating that are the foundation.
