you CANT actually see/ dodge decent punches, All you can do, really, is be actively "covering up" and generally moving around. A punch can be delivered far faster than you can detect it and blink your eye, much less move your head/body in time to significantly change what happens.

The smarter thing is to stay out of reach, kick, block kicks, and IF you catch them out/off-balance/bad angle ,etc, THEN close for the strikes/takedown. but just rushing in is extremely dangerous. people hold knives back along their forearms, etc, so what you THINK is a mere "brush" can be your carotid artery being opened wide. If you MUST close with somebody, first evaluate the enviornment/footing, and then precede your moving in with throwing your hat, glasses, pen, change, keys or phone into their face. check this guy's vids for some real eye openers

MMA fighting is weird. One second you are on top of the world, less than a year later you are laying on your back with a smashed face. I saw it happen to Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, etc etc etc all the way up to Ronda Rousey. Only guy who hasn't ended up that way is Georges St. Pierre, and that's only because he made the good decision to quit in the middle of his career.

real combat is like that, but you don't get to retire after you lose.

All too true. By the time someone throws a punch their mind has already calculated the action, their motor units have already fired and their fist is already travelling. Your mind has a fraction of a second to see the punch, then calculate how to avoid it, then recruit the motor units, and then get out of the way in time - all of that after the other guy has already completed his process and most likely threw several more punches right after the first one.

That's why you will not go a sparring session without hearing "relax" from any good coach. That's why boxers are always moving something - their hands, their torso/head, their feet - because you have to already be in movement to dodge effectively against a competent boxer. If you look at Rousey in this fight you will see she did nothing, not even the simplest things of parrying or blocking, let alone use movement.

make THEM keep doging/covering up, keep them in fear of your kicks and they won't be firing off much in the way of hand strikes. Most guys strikes, especially their kicks, would not bruize a bananna. if you can't put your hand or foot thru a pair of the (mortise and tenon/tongue/groove) breaking "boards, while they just hang on a string, you aint much.

here's a good set of fingers

good body
