I'm generally of the mindset that "It's always on." Still, the following story was unexpected.
I was in Philly at Barnes and Noble last week, hanging out with a couple of friends to get away from the heat outside. We were in line at the cafe, and I wasn’t paying much attention to anything. I’d paid for my food, waited for a few moments for the barista to prepare it and slide it down to my on a plate. When the food came, thinking nothing of it, I grabbed the plates and turned to walk back to my group.
A moment later, I hear a “hey!” from behind me. Turning around slowly, I see a ~HB7.5 looking (very obviously mock) angry.
Me: “Yes … ?”
HB7.5: “Do you enjoy stealing peoples’ food?”
That’s when I notice I’ve grabbed the wrong order. Because I’d not realized this before, my body language had been totally natural, and when I realized what was happening, I think my surprise just turned into a smile.
Me: (Looking down at what I’ve taken) “I have to say, I don’t approve of your taste. I mean, Angelfood Cake? This stuff is like eating a sponge.”
With an exaggerated disgusted look, I gave it back to her.
HB7.5: “Oh, so you steal my food and then you MAKE FUN OF IT?? I happen to enjoy this a lot more than, what’s that you have? A LOT more than Chocolate.”
Me: (Overly serious tone) “Well, my dear, it seems you’re in need of some serious help.” (pause) “Come on, I have an idea.”
Without asking, I take the Angelfood Cake back, grab a knife, and sit down at the table where my friends are sitting (~ ten feet away) and giving me weird looks, and I wave her over with what I hope is a “You really need help” kind of look. She sits down, and I split the cakes (I had a piece of double chocolate). In the end, she agrees that chocolate is better :-D. Ooh, and I got her number.
I may try to emulate this in the future, although it may get the wrong girl angry. Might still be fun tho.
