With this, fill in some blanks, whether your assumptions are correct or not is generally irrelevant. Express your thoughts, not overly express but enough to show her that you are interested in the details (doesnt matter if you care or not). This will spark her to give you all the goodies and build some rapport.

Its more for keeping interest or maintaining versus the gaining interest or establishing.

Yes you do still have to approach, open, all that good stuff. Just a reminder when you're "in there" that asking about details may potentially further your chances of getting a number and so on.
