Sup, I think a lot of people have posted about this subject already, but here’s what I have to say about humor. I used to have a lot of trouble with humor and I still do, but if you’re completely clueless I have a list of suggestions. But it’s important to realize that there’s only so much you can learn by reading on the internet. The rest of your knowledge should come from experience and trial and error.
Humor is an important quality in any person, and it is all one big mindset. If you don’t want to make people laugh, then you likely won’t make them laugh. But if you try too hard to make them laugh, you won’t make them laugh either. Your mindset should be of having a good time rather than just trying to make them laugh. That’s important.
Also realize that no one will ever laugh at your jokes 100% of the time, so it’s important not to worry about what others think of you. Another thing that is important to humor is that you practice and don’t go stale. If you read Weapons of Mass Seduction by Senor Fingers, try to remember what he said about watching TV, surfing the internet, and getting stuck in our own minds, alone. You can’t get better if you’re always alone and in your own head all the time. Another important thing about humor is that how you say something is usually just as important as what you’re actually saying.
Here are some ways I found that work:
-Tell stories about funny or interesting things that happened to you. This is probably one of the best ways, but the downside to this is that funny and interesting **** actually has to happen to you. If nothing funny or interesting ever happens to you, then this one won’t work.
-You could always make up your own stories. My friend once had me believing that there were sofas in the women’s bathrooms, and that the bathrooms in shopping centers were actually a secret meeting place for old women to knit and gossip. I also had a girl believing that I was half black, even though I am full Asian and don’t look even remotely black.
-A straightforward answer isn’t always the funniest way to answer questions, as I realized. Once when I was at a park, I had just come out of one of those portable bathrooms that don’t flush, and I was literally pissing into a piece of ****. After I came out, these two girls wanted to use it and they were like, “omg, is it clean?” I said “No,” but my friend said, “Yeah it’s clean. It’s so clean you could lick it.” Obviously it wasn’t that clean, but those girls laughed at his joke anyway.
-****y and funny always works, and while I’ve never used it, you can search the site for a few examples.
-Play along with other peoples’ jokes. There’s nothing worse than someone who doesn’t play along, unless the joke is a stupid piece of ****. In that case, don’t play along.
-Stay current with news, sports, etc. Watch funny shows and learn. There’s a show called “Whose Line is it Anyway” on the family channel that takes some comedians and gives them random situations for on-the-spot humor. It’s not all that funny, but people who can do on the spot humor are pretty impressive. If you want to see a guy who can is real good at keeping a funny conversation watch the Conan O Brien show. There’s also a show on Comedy Central called “crossballs” that airs every now and then, and it’s a debate show between experts and comedians who pose as experts.
-Sexual innuendo works, although I can’t think of a really good example off the top of my head.
-Sarcasm and irony also works, if you can figure out how to do it right.
The important thing to remember about these techniques, is that they are just techniques. As with all technique, you should use them to help you gain the right mindset, rather than remaining dependent on them. Just remember not to try to hard and that your objective is to have a good time.
And feel free to comment and flame.
