You’d be surprised to know what truly motivates you, what really gets your blood pumping. Read this question carefully:
“What has a greater influence on our decision making process…pleasure or fear?”
As soon as you feel you have the answer, then continue reading.
I’d be willing to bet that more than 90% of the people reading the above question would answer “pleasure” as being more of a motivational factor than fear. And when you think about it, it totally makes sense.
What truly inspires the venture capitalist to acquire large sums of cash? Or what about the pre-med student struggling his way through medical school? Hell, what makes the clerk at the grocery store get up every morning? Pleasure……right?
Wrong.
It’s Fear. No matter how you choose to sugar-coat it, fear rules your life. It rules all of our lives. What truly makes the venture capitalist, or pre-med student, and even the grocery clerk do what they do? It’s F-E-A-R.
But this isn’t a bad thing. Not at all. There are two things that distinctively make the human species separate and unique from all the others:
1) Our ability to freely choose how we shape and react to our environment.
2) Our ability to deceive, to lie.
We’ll talk about #2 perhaps in a different post. But for now, let’s focus on #1. And with that in mind, let’s use the concept of fear and see if we can make it work in our favor for once.
Imagine hearing the words “You only have 3 months to live.” Right now, at this very moment, what would be the first thing that runs through your mind? Knowing what you know now, would you feel satisfied in dying three months from know given what you’ve accomplished thus far?
In other words, would you feel completely at peace with passing from this earth three months from now and at the same time realizing that you’ve done everything you’ve ever wanted to?
Once again, I’d be willing to bet that over 90% of you (myself included) would not be happy with this. So here’s what I propose:
For the next 3 months, do whatever the **** you want to do. If you hate your job…quit. And go out with a bang! If you hate your girlfriend…break up with her. If you hate your life…go out and build a new one!
Get your hands dirty for once and wake up feeling revived for a change. If you’re in school then you’re probably going to be having finals pretty soon. Either way, as soon as the semester is over, go out and live! I cannot stress enough how great it has been taking a semester off from college.
And by the way, I'm not saying go out and be a complete *******. You can also do something like giving your parents a call after not talking to them for who knows how long. Or perhaps finding an old friend of yours from elementary school and seeing if they'd like to spend the day together. Whatever you do, make it real and genuine.
Now I understand that some of you won’t be able to completely let go of all that holds you down. We all need to eat and unfortunately money is the only middleman we have for this. But no matter how big the problem, there’s always a solution. And with any solution, there’s always a shortcut…a loophole.
I guarantee that if a doctor told you this year was your last that you would live your life much differently than you do now. From tomorrow onwards, these next three months will be filled with far more progress than any of my previous experiments combined.
Remember, we are brothers on this board. Our #1 goal is to ensure we’re all leading by example and experience. We all have certain goals and aspirations that will only continue to haunt us unless we act upon them. I cannot be responsible for your actions, but I can assure you that no matter what happens during the next 90 days, you will see the entire world in a whole new light.
Be safe, be smart, but most importantly…be human.
Let go of the past, forget about the future, and embrace the NOW!!
