I'll be visiting a recruiter this week. I'm making this post because a week before someone joins the military they want to take counsel of those that they respect. I respect this site and the people that post on it more than most of the people that I know, based entirely on the impact it has had on me in my own life. My goal when I joined this site in 2004 was to become the best Don Juan I was capable of being. It doesn't get more Don Juan than going into the military.

I will travel the world, meet people all over, all while getting paid and securing my future. I asked myself what I wanted from a college degree and the answer was the ability to travel. The navy will provide me with the opportunity to achieve my goal of traveling NOW, all while getting paid and educated for LATER.

Just want to know what all of you think of joining the Navy or any military branch for that matter. I'm doing it for myself because I'm at a point in my life where scraping for a college degree and climbing my way up the corporate latter sounds like a ****ty life, but traveling while getting paid and educated for free and getting laid all around the world sounds like heaven. A no brainer if there ever was one. Opinions?

I would really only take advice seriously if someone has been in it themselves or know someone very well that has been in it. I have been considering joining (Navy or Air Force) for about 2 years now.

I went into the Navy office and took the practice ASVAB, scored well, they said I could do ALMSOT any job. I really wanted to get into a job where I know I could get a real world job with those skills. Ideally I wanted to do intelligence work so I could join the FBI or something similar after I was done.

My recruiter just let me know they can't guarantee jobs and this really turned me off. I wanted to know what I was getting myself into. My step dad retired from the Air Force(Air Force=slow promos) he was a bomb loader for a long time(no real world equivilent) and also was in AWACS (Also no real life equivilent)

And about the school, if you aren't motivated enough to do it now I'm not 100% sure that will change after you get out. Just basing that off of myself too. But who knows, maybe you'll love the lifestyle and make it your career.

I'm just saying know what your getting yourself into and get all the facts(not just what the recruiter tells you, it is their job to get you to sign up after all) do some research on other places, from people with real experience.

Also keep in mind it's not all traveling and getting laid constantly. You work 40 hours a week like a normal job and get your days off and have base curfews and will be stationed at one place(Still a foreign place) for a couple years at a time. Not saying you can't have fun, just don't set the bar too high for yourself.

Overall I decided I didn't want to do it becasue I personally don't want to be involved in wars that exist simply to make a very select few more wealthy and control resources, didn't want to be a pawn. Also wanted to have some say over what I was going to be doing.

I think ROTC is the best deal. They pay for college up front, then you go in as an officer, doing less work for more pay.

I went into the Army (infantry) first, and then went to college and graduated. Wish I'd have went the ROTC route.

It was however an experiece to say the least. One of the best times of my life.

Thanks guys this information is great. One of my goals is to finish my Bachelors degree while enlisted. I'm almost halfway there now. I am worried though, how serious will employers take a bachelors degree from "navy college" as opposed to people applying for the job with BA from a university or civilian college.

A Degree is a Degree.....Don't let people tell you otherwise

Your Degree backed up with experience, Especially Military experience is good enough to get you in the door....
