Having paid for the book, and in a few days will actually get an idea of what to do in the gym, I was wondering, apart from warming up a bit, as well as stretching, is any food or activites needed before a workout session?
I've heard from some people that carbs are needed?
What is the time frame between eating the food and working out?
And also, is water better than sports drinks for working out?

yeah.. eat a banana, that should be sufficient. If you're following a good bulking diet, energy in the gym shouldn't be a problem

read my GUIDE TO BULKING

I think so. Drink water. You won't be getting so dehydrated that you would need a sports drink. It's just sugar water and electrolytes.

I go with my own secret recipe... Be sure not to tell anyone about this secret...
I use half orange juice and half water.
Because I don't want all orange juice cuz that's too sweet, but I want some carbs to give me energy. So I go with the OJ/water combo.

Take in 10-20 grams of protein before you work out, so it'll be digesting by the time you finish.
BTW, what book did you buy?
