Moving up the management ladder or the executive ladder in general? Here's how I did it.
1. Move closer to work so you can over power your competition (more time, more sleep, short commute, etc)
2. Dress for the job you want not the one you have. Dress slightly better than your piers. Take extra good care of your appearance. Look handsome. Look attractive. Be confident. People will take you more seriously.
3. Be professional - customer service is the key to seperating the boys from the men in business.
4. Be efficient with your time. For example, at my job there is this guy who has been there 10 years. I've been there only 1. I work more efficiently than him to the point where I can accomplish twice hat he does in any given day and its insulting almost.
5. Be eager to take on more work, new projects, etc. Keep your eye out for little ways where you can voice your opinion in a way that is not indicative of you have a complex of needed to voice it or validation of your
voice. Working harder and having more work might seem unfair to some but it will pass the time quicker, make you feel more satisfied
at the end of the day (for once I use that expression where it really belongs

), you will learn more, and
over time you will be recognized as superior to your collegues.
6. Start using the terms business continuity and efficiency.
Important reminder: even if you do not move up that ladder in your current position you will be more prepared for taking the next step in your life when another opportunity comes around or when you go looking for one. The confidence that you will exude when in new interviews (as a result of the feeling of satisfaction that you will have earned day in and day out in your previous job) cannot be faked.
Think about it this way. If you are The Man and you see through his action and work ethic that you have a Manny Ramirez on the bench are you going to put him in once in a while or are you going to prioritize him, make him a foundation of your lineup, and utilize him to the best advantage of the organization? Start sending work relatd emails on the weekends and at funny hours when the office is closed. Don't go overboard or else it will seem obvious. Keep them mostly short and to the point.
Let me know if you would like more specifics/examples on anything I just said.
Good luck.
