From what I've seen, the guy is usually more attractive than the girl. The guy will have a pretty good style and kept up hair but his girlfriend will be somewhat chubby looking. has anyone else noticed this?

The guy, since even if shes a hot chick she's viewed as kept/owned by the guy. And if its a fat/ugly guy with a 10, I would be even more impressed with the guy, just my take.

That may be, but I think even if one's a complete heterosexual they can still tell whether a guy is closer to looking like Brad Pitt or closer to looking like Mr. Bean. And it just so happens that the guys I see with not so attractive to ugly girls are closer to looking like Brad Pitt than to Mr. Bean.

Social matching theory. Sociologically speaking, couples are usually of roughly equal attractiveness. There are many scientific studies which prove this, although I'm at work and am too tired of the subject to dig around for references.
