I don't agree with some of the stuff he did and said later in life but I'm a big fan of chess. I was in the chess club in high school so say whatever the hell you want about chess not being DJ or whatever. Those people probably aren't smart enough to play.

Anyway, not too long ago, I saw the film Searching For Bobby Fischer. This was before he turned up again. But it goes to show some people have deficiencies and wrong ideas (H.P. Lovecraft was another example) but they were good at what they chose to do in life. Regrettably, Fischer may be remembered more for the things he did and said later in life rather than how good a chess player he was.

I have no words for this news...I've been reading his biographies and the rumors that he played online a few years ago, using drunken kings opening, and now this? This is one sad day for chess.

good riddance. He was a total assh0le, imo. He even praised 9-11 when it happened.

Whereas he spent his life being full of himself, his opponent Gary Kasperov was actually doing noble things -- like working to restore democracy in Russia via a presidential bid.

Sad news, in my opinion. Personality aside, he was the best player in the world for a long time.

Oh my God... When I was 12 I saw the movie Searching For Bobby Fischer too and was inspired to become as great a player as him... He was my hero for a good part of my pre-teen years... Damn... The man was a chess genius with a high IQ. This is a sad day for chess.

I've studied a whole buttload of his games, as nerdy as that sounds.

He was always reclusive, but let's look at what happened to him:

1. He played chess all over the world, everybody loved him.
2. Cold War/Political posturing
3. He played chess all over the world, the US tries to arrest him.
4. He hides out in Iceland/Japan.
5. People ask him about current events(ie. 9/11), he denounces the USA.

He was a man just doing his own thing, not bothering anybody, and even revealing a less insane perspective on world politics at the time by playing that infamous chess match in the soviet union. For some reason the USA thought it was as bad as treason... I'd be a tad pissed if my home country was so up in arms over a chess game.

I'm sure his support of 9/11 isn't what it appeared to be, you know how media works...

Actually Kasparov and Fischer are almost a generation apart, and I don't believe they've ever played a serious match together. Fischers opponent was always boris spassky.

He was killed by the illuminati/NWO.

You young kids will soon wake up to The Matrix, when these Nazis make it so obvious!!! Fischer was 35 years ahead of his time!!! His chess game was his weakest point of his existence - his mind was his greatest!!!! You bastards will soon find out of his fascist warnings! to America!

RIP. Although i never quite got why he was so antisematic when his mum was jewish. The guy was a complete genius though, much respect.

Oh no, it was. There is video footage (an interveiw) where he praises 9/11 and said it was about time (among other strong support for it.)

Regardless of his political views it is pretty sick to praise the killing of over 2000 people.

But he was a genuine kook ayway.

That dude was mentally ill, judging by his interviews and paranoia he sounded like he was suffering from Schizophrenia. In the last years of his life, he looked like he was a homeless person even though he won $3 Million dollars in a chess rematch in 1992 with Boris Spassky.

Ah that's sad. One of the greatest minds. What a coincidence to die at the age of 64 .
