My neck hurts

Last night was 'rear naked choke hold night' at MMA class, and now my neck hurts. From what I remember, I think I'm supposed to avoid heat for at least three days, and use just ice. What is the best icing routine? Is it 20 minutes on/off as much as possible? Is a sore neck a pain that can be ignored, or do I wait for it to stop hurting so I don't hurt it worse?

If anyone has any other sore neck advice, it would be appreciated.

i would ice it 3 times a day for 20mins each, massage it 3 times a day or get a chick to, and stretch it out 3 times a day do this for 3 days then start adding heat after that

It's aesthetically therapeutic to bite the pillow to throw your neck back into whack.

If that doesn't work I suggest a Chiropractor for the neck and a Proctologist for that sore ass.

I have a disc herniation of C6-C7. Yet I still lift heavy and also do brazilian jiu-jitsu. I have alot of knowledge when it comes to neck injuries. If I were you I would give it some time before I go to the DR unless the pain is intolerable.

Even if you did hurt your neck bad( Disc herniation) These are your 4 options.

1. Pain medicine.
2. Physical therapy.
3. Cervical injection.
4. Surgery.

I found what helped me most with injuries is positive thinking. Read books by John sarno. Its about mindbody disorders and its very interesting.

What helped my neck the most was lying in a heating pad every night before bed. My pain was chronic. In your case you would want to ice it and spend some time in a steam room or better yet a jacuzzi.

Thanks for the replies, even you, karma, learning to fight as an art is taking the fight out of me in day-to-day living.

I think it is just a muscle strain, nothing to do with vertebrae thankfully. When it gets right again, I am going to start doing neck bridges and whatever I can to get a stronger neck. Being tall gives an advantage in leverage when grappling, but the downside in bjj is that us taller guys tend to have a nice long neck for choking. Mine is going to be my weak point unless I work on it.
