Wooden boards are perfect. Rubber mats are handful to keep the noise down.

Depends if he drops the weight after a set or if he goes really heavy. Wood boards/floors can splinter, dent, warp, ect.

I know Sports Authority was having a sale on some of that rubber flooring you see in gyms.
