I might be applying for a job down there and I wanted to hear from those who live in the area.

First off, do you consider this area part of the "south". I always believed anything that is Maryland and below is considered the "south".

However, I had also heard Viginians call Northern Virginia "NOVA" and do not consider it part of Virginia.

Is it a good place for singles in their late 20's, early 30's?

I live in Richmond and I can tell you we do call it Nova and we generally look on Northern Virginianers as yankees. Ridiculous cost of living and buttloads of traffic. Not to mention the condascending attitude of many of it's residents. Cool clubs and bars in the area though.

i grew up in western md and then a suburb of baltimore, and later went to college in north carolina.

baltimore is not in the South. don't buy the "south of the mason-dixon line" crap. it doesn't apply now, if it ever did. the only southern thing in baltimore is calling dc "worshingtun"

dc is not in the South.

dc suburbs are not in the South.

fredericksburg, va is barely in the South.

there are lots of folks your age floating around that the DC metro area, but many of them are tightly focused and/or highly career-minded due to the gravity of Capitol Hill, etc. expect to run into lots of tightly-wound chicks (this is a note of both caution and opportunity)

[edit: you'd think growing up near frederick, md i'd be able to spell 'fredericksburg, va' properly...oh well]

ditto to what he said, except replace "applying for a job" with going there to live. I've sent PMs to people I found out stay in VA but everyone's input would be helpful

I grew up in DC and yeah, Northern Virginia is generally well educated and ethnically diverse - meaning that you can't really consider it part of the South. Great asian food.

As for DC proper, go to Georgetown if you're looking to meet young cool people. You didn't say what you do for a living but of course politics is big in DC and you won't win yourself any points by trashing Obama.

I spent the first 18 years of my life in ole maryland. Maybe I was just too young but the PA MD and VA areas were all very boring for me. There are decent enough people to meet but as soon as the chance hit me I got the heck outta there. One year Hawaii, the rest in Vegas.

I stray from the subject. Maryland is a very obscure place. If you go to NY NJ, Vermont New Hampshire etc etc, you are definately a southerner. You have a southern accent. But like wise if you go to The Carolinas, Georga or Florida you're definately a "yankee". I never thought too much about it because I grew up with the notion that I was better then all those wannabes.

There are decent local bars there. low cost of living, lots of open roads for driving and good food. I just can't get over how early everything closes there! What the hell is this "last call buisness?!" Why don't they serve alcohol on sunday?!!!!
