could you still approach without a smile?

So, this is been bugging me for some time, just today HB9 came and stood next to me, I tried to see any smile but didn't get any, so I was confused between this occurred feeling..

So is the smile a must before making any approach or can I approach someone sitting or standing next to me without clear eye contact?

Try and make eye contact if possible, but don't disengage just for that. Just say hi and if she doesn't smile and say hi or anything, then you can drop her like she's Pluto.
