So you want to lose muscle by cycling, but want to gain muscle with dumbells... at the same time?

That's counterproductive.

Why don't you just not do anything? That way you'll look the same as if you started this gain muscle and lose muscle at the same time program?

Just a sidenote...

My quads got huge from cycling. Used to bike 16km a day on the highest gear, in about 20 minutes.

Don't underestimate cycling as a quad workout, as long as the resistance is high.

definition = low bodyfat

size = lifting with big compound lifts: bench, squat, deadlift (requires a barbell, lots of weight, a bench, and a power/squat rack of some sort)

you need diet, cardio & rest to work on the first; diet, lifting & rest to work on the second. after that it ain't rocket science.

4.5 years I ago I lost 40 pounds in around 4 months by Mtn. biking. The only change I made to my diet during that time period was to switch to Diet Coke instead of regular Coke. After awhile I would put some interval training in there where you ride normal for 3 minutes, then max out for 60-90 seconds, and then ride normal for 3 minutes, wash, rinse, and repeat. Or you could just go up some massive climbs which will take care of the interval part for you.

You can lose weight doing a lot of cardio activities, i.e. running, swimming, biking, etc.

My suggestion is to find the one that you enjoy doing that way it won't be a chore to do it and you'll do it more often.

squats, deadlifts, incline bench, military press, pull-ups, pulldowns. none of which, incidentally, use dumbbells.

and in that order. counterintuitively, only the first three are the most important, you can substitute lots of other work for the last three.

Well can cycling burn calories...very much so...

I train and coach riders with a powermeter for road cycling. I expend about 600-675 kilojoules an hour, so for a 2 hour ride I'll I do about 1300 kilojoules of work. An occasional 4 hour ride ~3000kj. Roughly the conversion (Lab tested) is at least 1 kj = 1Kcal, but more likely it is closer to 110%. So a 2 hour ride is using up at least 1300 kj. I weight 145 lbs so, a bigger guy will use like 700-800 kj/hour (Calories).

Even if you were inexperienced or slower you would burn at least 500-700 kcal (calories) an hour at a brisk pace. Quite effective for weight loss.

Now Mtn. Biking would be similar in terms of calories used, but a better overal workout as the arms and backs are used much more for the body english required to turn, jump logs, etc.

Oh, yeah cycling can make your lower body very impressive...
